4. A variance for three (3) additional ground signs (Drive Thru Pharmacy); code permits
two (2), applicant shows five (5), section 1163.27(a). See Note No. 2.
5. A variance for ground signs too close together (directional signs); section 1163.27(a).
Note: 1- Includes all Giant Eagle signs, 424.7 sq. ft., and Get Go signs, 102.7 sq. ft. 2 -
A main ground sign already exists.
Mr. Majeed of MCG Architecture and Mr. Bellcnap of the sign company were sworn in. NIr.
Majeed said the 33/4 inch variance is due to the letters P and y in Pharmacy but the individual
letters themselves are less than 3 feet tall. There are three existing wall signs and one additional
wall sign is needed for the new pharmacy entrance. The new entrance will be separate from the
main entrance. The existing northwest entrance will be converted into the drive through
window. The 55.9 square foot variance is for total square footage of signage on the site.
However it needs to be recalculated as a sign was removed from the gas station canopy. The
four ground signs are directional signs to control and direct vehicle traffic through the drive
through safely and the variance for ground signs too close is the distance between the four
ground signs.
Mr. Mitchell said the 33/4 inch variance is minimal. The total number of wall signs is less then
what is currently in place. The variance for total square footage is 38 square feet for the site with
one sign removed. Ms. Rudolph asked if the total square footage for the site included the card
outlet store and accounted for what is allowed on the others. Mr. Mitchell said no the total
square footage for the site was calculating Giant Eagle store and GetGo fuel station only. The
square footage of the kiosk is so small it's allowed less than a hundred square feet so he
packaged the lcioslc and the Giant Eagle store front total square footage to calculate total square
footage allowed creating a master sign paclcage for Giant Eagle and what they are allowed. Ms.
Rudolph questioned the remaining spaces which were not calculated and Mr. Mitchell said each
of the other spaces would be calculated as the spaces are filled. He does not object to the ground
sign locations to each other as they are needed for traffic safety. Ms. Rudolph noted that there
were tllree wall signs on the drive through canopy and aslced why they were not addressed. Mr.
Mitchell said on drive troughs' they do not loolc at them as signs. Ms. Rudolph aslced if the new
The Pharnzacy sign would be illuminated and Mr. Majeed said only the new pharmacy sign
would be ilhuninated. Board members had no objections to the variances as amended as they
were not excessive and only The Pharmacy sign would be illuminated.
Ms. Rudolph moved, seconded by 1VIrs. Bellido, to grant CMS10-31: Giant Eagle Pharmacy
of 27264 Loi-ain Road the following variances as amendecl:
1. A 3-3/4" variance for a wall sign higher than code allows (Sign A); code
permits 4 ft., applicant shows 4'-3-314", section 1163.28(c).
2. A variance for two (2) additional wall signs on a unit (three (3) existing and one (1)
new); code permits two (2), applicant shows four (4), section 116328(a).
3. A 38 sq. ft. variance for total signage on a unit; code permits 471.5 sq. ft., applicant
shows 509 sq. ft., section 1163.25(c). See Note No. 1.
4. A vlriance for two (2) additional ground signs (Drive Thru Pharmacy); code
pei-mits two (2), applicant shows four (4), section 1163.27(a). See Note No. 2.
5. A variance for ground signs too close together (directional signs); section 1163.27(a).
The motion was approved 4-0. ,
4
