the note. The pros and cons of changing the hours of the festival were discussed. In 2009 one of
the artists left early, driving a vehicle through the festival grounds to pack up her merchandise.
Ms. Brown suggested adding a rule that no vehicles will be permitted in the booth area until after
the close of the show. Mr. Kepperley will add it to the final instructions. Ms. Nemeth said the
kitchen closed before the end of the show. Due to the heat a couple artists suffered dehydration
because there was no other source of water. She suggests a last call before the kitchen is closed.
Mr. Yustick recommends promotions and advertising for the art show be improved. He suggests
information on Cultural Activities events be distributed earlier and to a wider audience. Toward
that end he obtained a list of city businesses from the North Olmsted Building Department. Due
to the cost of mailing he plans to deliver flyers and request they post the information. Ms.
Nemeth suggested the schools be approached for student assistance in distributing the flyers as a
community service project. Mr. Kepperley said in his experience many businesses decline to
post or provide a place for flyers citing corporate policy. Mr. Wahl felt local business owners
would be more open to it than national chains. If the City mails a publication to the residents,
information on the vaxious events could be included.
From the Institute of Art, Ms. Brown received a$30 certificate towards admissions fees for a
senior student that wants to attend the school. She called both North Olmsted and Bay Village
High Schools without success. The art department representatives told her speakers visit the
schools to provide the students with information about the institute but there has been no interest.
Ms. Brown plans to call again. Ms. Nemeth recommends providing the Institute of Art a free or
half-price tent at the festival to promote the school and allow graduating students could display
their work. Other promotional ideas were discussed including having a flyer inserted in local
newspapers, which per Mr. Kepperley, is about $400 depending on distribution. Another option
is including information in school flyers, which is then placed in the local papers.
Mr. Kepperley indicated Cultural Activities will once again be jurying the student art show in
May. The possibility of including the Middle School was discussed.
NEW BUSINESS
Invitation to Mayor Kennedy
The members of the Cultural Activities Commission respectfully invite Mayor Kennedy to attend
the February 3 meeting if his schedule permits.
Proiect Ideas for 2010
Mr. Kepperley explained the Living History project. Mr. Wahl felt North Olmsted was the only
City in the area that did not look like it was participating in the holiday season with regards to
lights and decorations. In his opinion the City needs to make a greater effort to decorate City
properties and thoroughfaxes. The suggestion to partner with Master Gardeners to create a
community garden was discussed. Mr. Kepperley shared his concerns with the suitability of the
location for a community garden behind the former Special Horizons building on Butternut
Ridge Road. Mr. Yustick will be meeting with the Garden Club this week; he will bring up the
