J ^
cemeteries to verify facts in order to support and validate anecdotal notes and accounts. A
Cemetery Committee ineeting will be scheduled the same day as and before the July Landmarks
meeting. Mr. Schumann said the OHS has an account open and about $585 towards the
cemetery improvement fiind. Mr. Thomas said if there are veterans in the cemetery without
stones, the VA will provide them free of charge. He gave an example of obtaining a marlcer in
the Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Olmsted Falls for a confederate soldier.
City Identity & Branding Proiect
A copy of a questionnaire was distributed. A public meeting was held on May 20, for which
attendance was good despite conflicting school events and other meetings. The residents'
perception and concept of city image is vital to this project. Therefore it is important to gather as
much input as possible and allow time for residents to participate in the process. The period for
public comment was extended to June 18. In addition, since city history plays a lcey role in city
identity, it is important that the Landmarks Commission, stewards of that history, be involved.
Stewards Program: 2010 Application
The Preserve America Stewards Recognition application was submitted by the June 1 deadline.
Representative Kucinich offered a letter of support that was included in the application along
with a letter froin the Executive Director of the Cleveland Metroparks. Mr. Schumann thanked
everyone involved in malcing the application.
Landmarks Guidelines Task Force
Mr. Neville has Ueen out of town for several weelcs so the taslc force has not met recently. Mr.
Ricluler indicated he has some infoi-mation regarding asbestos for further discussion. This topic
is relevant as a few homes on Butternut Ridge Road have asbestos siding and others have siding
covering asbestos. Mr. O'Malley reported that the Building Department is enacting new
requirements, as mandated Uy the EPA, requiring licensed contractors to complete lead-based
paint training. In the fiiture a similar approach may be talcen with asbestos.
City code requires driveways be either concrete or asphalt. Ms. Wenger explained there have
been requests from residents to install brick pavers. Currently applicants are required seelc a
variance from the Board of Zoning Appeals. Amending the code to allow brick pavers is being
considered. Separate from the city as a whole, the question of whether brick pavers are
appropriate for historic district driveways is an issue. A Butternut Ridge resident has requested to
replace a gravel turnaround with briclc pavers; the matter is pending. A recommendation from
the Landmarks Commission is requested. If permitted, standardized specifications for type,
color, shape, size, pavers versus stamped concrete, and pervious versus impervious, need to be
considered. Once approved and part of the code, applications for brick pavers could be
addressed through the minor change process or perhaps for a large project, a certificate of
appropriateness request.
Many early roads in the area were brick and would therefore be an appropriate and attractive
material in the historic district. It was agreed that briclc pavers should be a traditional brick
