The Commission encourages education and
creates an environment that promotes the community's historic sites, events and citizens in order
to foster civic pride.
LANDMARKS COMMISSION
The members of the 2011 City of North Olmsted Landmarks Commission are as follows:
Dale Thomas, Chairman Thomas Dubowski Albert Richner, RA
David Neville, Vice Chairman Robert Parry, AICP Paul Schumann
Maryellen Davis Donald Rerko, AIA Brian Walsh
CERTIFICATES OF APPROPRIATENESS
The Landmarks Commission has the responsibility of reviewing proposals for demolition,
construction or alteration of any landmark or property within a landmarks district. The
Landmarks Commission holds public hearings and issues certificates of appropriateness for
proposals which meet the criteria for acceptable work. For guidance, the Commission looks to
the Secretary of the Interior's standards for rehabilitation. Only one Certificate of
Appropriateness was requested and granted in 2011 for a roof shingle color change to the
property located at 27645 Butternut Ridge Road.
CERTIFIED LOCAL GOVERNMENT
As a Certified Local Government, the City of North Olmsted, led by the Landmarks
Commission, made application for a CLG grant to conduct an intensive level survey of the
Butternut Ridge Historic District. The purpose of the project is to update the historic inventory
forms for contributing properties in the district to improve recordkeeping and ultimately
determine if the district would be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The grant
application was successful, and the City was awarded $9,000 toward the project, contributing
$6,000 in matching funds. The City contracted with the firm of Chambers, Murphy & Burge
Restoration Architects to perform the survey wark. The consultants met with members of the
Landmarks Commission to set the project framework and coordinated a research day at the
Frostville Museum archives. They completed their field work and photography of the Historic
District and submitted the required number of I-forms to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office
by the end of 2011. In 2012, the project will conclude with all properties entered into the online
database and a final report produced which will evaluate the district for National Register
eligibility.
