HISTORICAL RECOGNITION
Desip-nation of Landmarks
Perhaps the most notable accomplishment of the Landmarks Commission in 2011 was the
official designation of the George Biddulph House located at 25896 Butternut Ridge Road as a
North Olmsted Landmark. The Commission followed the procedure for landmarking properties
as described in the North Olmsted Codified Ordinances Chapter 165.05, which included
nomination, research, review and recommendation by the Planning and Design Commission,
public hearing with property owner participation, and finally City Council designation through
legislation which was approved on December 20, 2011. Recognition is due to Al Richner, the
primary researcher and author of the landmarks designation report, whose detailed and vivid
description of the house and its history brought the Biddulph family alive to its readers. After
long vacancy, Commission members were encouraged by the purchase of the property by the
North Olmsted Foundation, Inc. for use by local Boy Scout groups for meetings, activities and
storage. NOFI representatives indicated their commitment to the restoration and preservation of
this historic property. The landmark plaque will be hung in early 2012.
Historic Recognition Program
The Landmarks Commission authored a letter of recognition to the owners of the property
located at 26405 Butternut Ridge Road commending them for the restoration work recently
completed. They were encouraged to apply for a historic recognition plaque. No applications
for the Historic Recognition Program were received in 2011.
2011 PROJECTS
Speaker Series
The Landmarks Commission speaker series continued in 2011 with the co-sponsorship of a
speaker at the Olmsted Historical Society's Antique Gas and Engine Show on July 30, 2011.
The topic of the talk was antique clocks.
Cemetery Improvement Proiect
Significant progress was made in 2011 regarding recordkeeping for the City cemeteries.
Community volunteer and Olmsted Historical Society member Gary Porter took on the task of
organizing the existing records for Butternut Ridge Cemetery and Coe Cemetery. Records are
being assembled and inputted into a searchable database which will include all information
regarding the lot, the owners, the headstone information and any other pertinent records.
Also, the Olmsted Historical Society continues to maintain an account containing donations
toward future cemetery improvements.
