COIVIMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
The Landmarks Commission has worked hard to form and expand partnerships with other city
government groups. Along with the Planning and Development Department, the Commission
continues a working relationship with the Mayor, City Council, and other boards and
commissions. The Landmark Commission's membership includes a member of City Council
and two members of the Planning and Design Commission.
The Landmarks Commission is proud to be a service agency of the Social Involvement Through
Education and Service (SITES) Program at North Olmsted High School. For many years, the
Commission has mentored one or more high school senior each semester. These students are put
to work on Landmarks Commission projects or tasks at Frostville Museum.
Olmsted Historical Societv and Frostville Museum
The City of North Olmsted is fortunate to have an active historical society. The Olmsted
Historical Society, recognized in 2010 by First Lady Michelle Obama as a Preserve America
Steward, operates the Frostville Museum, which is located in North Olmsted within the
boundaries of the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. The Museum consists
of several of the oldest historic homes of North Olmsted. Many of these have been moved to the
site over the last 50 years.
In 2011, the Olmsted Historical Society celebrated its 50`h anniversary. The occasion was
marked with a dedication ceremony of an Ohio Historical Marker on May 1, 2011 followed by a
reception.
In addition to its already busy events schedule, the Olmsted Historical Society added a weekly
farmers market each Saturday from May through October in 2011. Also, Frostville hosted the
first Olmsted Festival of the Arts, a merger of two past arts events. In 2011, OHS was successful
in obtaining a Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Grant for the 2012 Festival.
It is also worthwhile to note that Landmarks Commission member and Olmsted Historical
Society archivist Dale Thomas had a second book published about the history of the region in
2011. Olmsted.• Then & Now is an illustrated record of the urbanization of the area resulting
from the economic boom following World War II.
GOALS FOR 2012
The Commission has numerous goals for 2012, which include the following:
• Prepare a detailed report for the potential landmark designation of 4302 Porter Road.
Continue to identify potential landmarks and eligible properties for historic recognition
plaques.
• Successfully complete the Butternut Ridge Historic District Survey Project. If recommended
in the report, explore the process for designating the Butternut Ridge Historic District on the
National Register of Historic Places.
