opened the discussion to the audience with a reminder that they were there to discuss the
facade and the outward changes to the property only. Mr. Herbster ask the commissioners to
please remember that throughout this whole project promises have been made and broken.
Before approving anything look at a sample of the materials that are to be used. They were
suppose to plant trees a specific height with the mounding, and yes they added more trees, but
they are smaller and have yet to reach the specific height that was to be used. They promised
small category shops. A grocery store has 56 categories in it, with high volume and extended
hours, 1V1r. Herbster indicated the neighbors have also been accused of printing falsehoods in
the flyers that were sent out, but they are excerpts from the Water Tower Square minutes. Mr.
Herbster indicated that he was irritated that Ms. Oring was being accused of misrepresenting
and misquoting anything that was said in the room. She is the most honest person he knows
and ii she didn't know something she would ask before continuing, and she would bend over
backwards for anyone. Carnegie Management promised 80,000 square feet in one store, and
backed down on what was promised. Please make sure everything is signed, sealed and
delivered before anything is done. Ms. Jones a Rocky River resident that lives in a condo
behind the Giant Eagle store on Center Ridge Road in Rocky River, is concerned about the
things that have happened in Rocky River. Ms. Jones indicated the trucks deliver at all hours
of the day and night delivering seven days a week. They have done nothing about the noise
level from the refrigeration units on the roof of the building, and further more there are power
outages in the condos. When the tenants from the condos complained they sent the city
engineer out to do their check when they knew there would be no deliveries. Ms. Jones
detailed how the entrances were only good if you were parked in the front of the store. Ms.
Jones indicated she had on several occasions tried to get someone from Giant Eagle to address
her concerns, no one bothered to return her calls. Rocky River City Council hadn't had such
complaints in 40 years, not until Giant Eagle moved in. Ms. Jones indicated that when she saw
the article in the Plain Dealer she wanted to let people know what her experiences with Giant
Eagle were.
DUE TO A TECHNICAL ERROR TAPE TW O OF THREE IS INAUDIBLE, TAPE
TWO' S SECTION OF THE MEETING IS 'I'AKEN FROM THE ASSISTANT
CLERKS NOTES."
Ms. Herbster asked Mr. Papandreas if the trash compactor would run 24 hours a day. As
Circuit City had promised to keep their doors closed and they have not done so. Mr.
Papandreas advised that they would run the compactor only once a day. Ms. Herbster then
asked if it wasn't a fire hazard to have stuff stacked and only put into the compactor once a
day. Mr. Papandreas indicated that they have a specific area in front of the compactor for trash
to be stacked. 1VIs. Kummer indicated she had sent a letter to Giant Eagle and also faxed
information to therri after the Planning Commission meeting held two weeks ago. To this date
none of her requests for an answer have been acknowledged. Ms. Kummer indicated in her
letter she asked Giant Eagle to please work with Mayor Musial, but she didn't know if the
mayor had talked to anyone at Giant Eagle yet. Ms. Kummer couldn't understand why such a
large business doesn't address neighbors concerns and the commissioners should think about
the fact that Giant Eagle doesn't reply. Ms. Kummer indicated that the Water Tower Square
Giant Eagle was 90,000 square feet, bigger than the Rocky River Store or the Finest if
Fairview Park which is 51,000' square feet. She ask since this went to tHe Architectural
Review Board why can't the representatives from Giant Eagle answer our questions about the
noise level. 1VIs. Kummer indicated the residents want a neighborhood store not a super store.
Mr. Richly ask Mr. Crook if the video store was part of Giant Eagle which was the old Media
4
