ih
1%,
, mulch, bails of materials, etc. ). Mr. Perisi advised displaying merchandise in front of the building
is permitted by the City of Brooklyn. Mr. Platt noted they are in the process of cleaning up the
Brooklyn location and it will look much better in about two weeks. Mr. Brennan noted this
commission will include in their recommendation that there is to be no storing of any
merchandise on the outside of the bu.ilding as this will create a safety hazard for pedestrians. Mr.
Perisi confirmed there will be no materials stored on the outside of the building as it is not
permitted in the city of North Olmsted. Mr. Spalding advised the assistant fire chief
recommended in the memo dated June 8, 1998 that pedestrian traffic be somehow diverted from
the pick-up zone. The members discussed how diverting pedestrian traffic away from the pick-
up zone during periods ofheavy duty loading could be accomplished. It was noted the narrowest
width of the sidewalk in front of Home Depot is 8 feet. The developer confirmed heavy
equipment such as tow motors will be needed for transporting heavy building ma.terials. It was
noted there will be flashing lights to warn people. Mrs. O'Rourke noted little children will be
attracted to the flashing lights and tow motors. Mr. Tallon suggested blocking off the front of
the `2ndoor Lumber Yard".at both ends of the canopy to pedestrian traffic during times when the
tow motors are operating. On the inside of the center divider (between the through road and the
pick-up lane) there could then be sidewalk with crosswalk lines drawn in to divert pedestrian
tra$'ic around the loading zone. Mr. Perisi noted this was discussed when the Severance location
was proposed but there were concerns raised about inixiug pedestrian traffic with vehicular
traffic. In addition he did not want to divert pedestrian traffic away from "The Home Depot" and
stated this would be similar to diverting traffic away from the entrance to Mares because
someone is coming out with a shopping cart. Mr. Tallon noted there is a marked difference
between a shopping cart and a tow motor as a tow motor is not conducive to pedestrian traffic.
He then marked on the plan dated June 9, 1998 outlining the recommendations of the
commission. Mr. Sherry wondered if this could all be accomplished with striping so that they do
not have to ramp up and down four times. The members did not have a problem with a striped
walkway on the inside of the center divider curb, but cautioned the pick-up lane may have to be
widened. to accommodate both the pedestrians and the trucks. Mr. Perisi agreed to put in an _
angled striped pattem to accommodate pedestrian traffic as requested by the commission. Mr. Tallon opened up discussion for audience participation. Councilman McKay requested that the
planning commission incorporate in the minutes the following: there is no retail sales on the
outside of the store; no sales especially from the rear'of the store; no storage outside of the
building; and no signage other than city approved signs. Ms. Diver questioned the size of "lhe
Home Depot" wall sign. Mr. Conway stated the signage for the entire center will be addressed in
the future as it is to be presented as a package for the entire shopping center. Mr. Barrow noted
the letters on the elevation plan are shown at 6 feet which will be 76 feet long. Mr. Tallon noted
it appears that they are proportioning the size of the sign to the size of the store so that smaller
stores will have smaller signs, whereas larger stores will have much larger signs. He noted the
signage is to be presented as an entire package for the strip center. Ms. Diver provided the •
?commission with an excerpt from "The Toledo Blade" regarding problems with a Home Depot in
the Toledo area. It was noted this pertains to the storage of products outside the building, which
Mr. Parisi agreed would not be done at the North Olmsted site. Ms. Diver requested that the
building department monitor the operations of this facility to prevent the storage of any materials
on the outside of the building. Mr. Brennan questioned the d.istance between the satellite dish
and the edge of the building. Mr. Paxisi stated the satellite dish is: white or silver in color; 3 feet
in diameter, and sets back 24 feet from the parapet. He elaborated the elevation is not to scale as
far as the satellite dish as this was enlarged so that everyone is aware there is a satellite proposed
for the roof of the building. The parapet will be 3 feet six inches high, therefore Mr. Parisi noted
2
