much higher the new front would be than the existing front. Mr. Brennan suggested the plans
showed the front entrance to be a 33 feet high entrance. Mr. Spalding questioned how high the
building would be after the changes are made. 1VIr. Brennan suggested that it would be an
18foot structure with a 33 foot high entrance. He further commented that the proposed sign
looked huge to him. Mr. Spalding suggested he had seen Babies "R" us in North Canton and
the sign was huge. N1r. Tallon questioned what the sign limit size for the current building was.
Mr. Conway indicated that it was 75 square feet. Mr. Brennan asked if the proposed sign
exceeded the 75 square foot requirement. Mr. Conway indicated that it did exceed the 75
square foot requirement. Mr. Tallon suggested that the facade would be bigger than the
building. Mr. Elbin suggested the facade was a proto- type. Mr. Tallon commented that the
white aluminum should be changed to brick. Ms. Egan indicated that the proposed front was a
basics proto-type on 99% of the Babies "R" iJs in the United States. The white is not as white
as the sample shows it to be, and it does not stand out as much when you see the brick and
efface together. The windows will have teal clipping and the purple and teal colors are proto-
type colors for Babies "R" Us. In the past they have added brick to the facade but it is usually
white. The storefront is a proto type and they like to maintain the corporate image. Mr. Tallon
indicated that with the sign on the building would let people know it is a Babies "R" Us, as it is
quite a big sign. Ms. Egan indicated that the sian would only be 5 feet high. Mr. Brennan
suggested that the proposed Babies "R" Us sign was at least 60feet long. Mr. Spalding
suggested that when he saw the Babies "R" Us sign in Canton he commented to his spouse how
huge it looked. Mr. Tallon reviewed that at 50 feet x 5 feet that is 250 square feet and code
allows 75 square feet. Ms. Egan suggested that they would adjust the signage issue. Mr.
Spalding suggested the colors really glared out and asked if the color could be toned down to
eliminate the glare. 1VIs. Egan indicated that an off white color could be used. Mr. Spalding
commented that he thought an off white would blend in better with the brick. Mr. Brennan
suggested that the building was off the main thorough fair and behind other commercial
structures the huge entrance and signage is to point people to their store. They are also
proposing road signage to point their way to the store. They have a good product and they do
not need to make a grand entrance out of everything. It should be kept within a reasonable size.
Mrs. O'Rourke commented that the building stood alone, as it is not in a strip center. Mr.
Conway commented that the City allows letters up to 4 foot high and this building is
substantially off Lorain Road. So there is merit to the argument that they need to increase the
height of the letters to get the same impact that they would at 100 feet. 1W. Tallon indicated
that the code allows 75 square feet and they are proposing 250 square feet that is a big
difference. Mr. Conway suggested that he was not disagreeing with that, but that he was
pointing out the difference between what is permitted in height, which is 4 foot and what they
have requested, which is 5 foot. There is not that much difference between 4 foot and 5 foot.
Their name is long so they are going to have some issues with the code. Mr. Koeth suggested
that he thought everyone agreed that the board would like to have a different front. Mr. Asseff
indicated that the white storefront was too bright. Mr. Spalding questioned if M[s. Egan had
picture of other Babies "R" Us with her. Ms. Egan indicated that she did not. Mr. Tallon
indicated that he would like to send the proposal on to the Architectural Review Board for heir
review and have them return. He questioned if anything else would be dorie to the front of the
building. Mr. Elbin indicated "no," they would only paint the light poles and cleanup the
parking lot. Mr. Tallon questioned if there were any plans for the back of the building. Mr.
6
