12. 3-Day Blinds & More; 4687 Great Northern Blvd.:
Request for variance (1123.12). Proposal consists of a sign package.
The following variances is requested:
1) A 173.75 square foot variance for business unit signage, (Code permits 80'sq ft, applicant
requests 253.75sq ft), (1163.11 C).
2) A 3.6 foot variance for sign height, (Code permits 4'ft applicant requests 7.6'ft), (1163.12 A).
3) A 178.75 square foot variance for total signage for a wall sign, (Code permits 75'sq ft
applicant requests 253.75sq ft), (1163.12 A).
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 sections, (1163.11 C) and (1163.12 A).
Chairman Gomersall called all interested parties forward and reviewed the variances being
requested. Mr. Bayaus with Allied sign company came forward to present the proposal. Mr.
Bayaus suggested there was a commitment from the landlord to fix the fagade. He commented
that the fagade would be painted. Mr. Gomersall suggested he was under the impression that the
applicant wanted to remove the existing sign and replace it with a bigger sign. Mr. Bayaus
indicated the existing parapet was built for the previous tenants, Habitat. He suggested the
height of the sign would remain the same. Mr. Bayaus commented, what makes the overall size
different is the & More will be under 3 day Blinds instead of next to it, and according to the
Cities code both lines are boxed in for the square footage total. Mr. 1Vlaloney suggested the
existing sign presently in place looked fine and balanced. Mr. Bayaus indicated that the present
sign would come down and the owner of the building would be cleaning the facade. He
suggested the existing sign was a 36"inch set, and the new sign would be a 42"inch set. Mr.
Rymarczyk indicated that the size of the current sign was 27"inches high. Mr. Bayaus indicated
the tenant is trying to fill the fagade. Mr. Gomersall suggested a variance of, three feet six inches
(3'.6"), was too much of a request. Mr. Koberna commented that the board wanted the size of
the requested sign reduced, and suggested the existing sign be reused. Mr. Bayaus indicated the
applicants would like 42" inch letters. Mr. Maloney suggested he felt the current size of the
letters were adequate for the location of the building. Mr. Gomersall reviewed that the board
wanted the current size sign to remain, but the applicant could rearrange the lettering, and place
& More, under the 3 Day Blinds letters. Mr. Gomersall asked Mr. Rymarczyk what variances
would be needed if the existing signage was used, and & More lettering was placed under 3 Day
Blinds. Mr. Rymarczyk indicated that he would need a new layout showing the dimensions to
calculate what would be required. Mr. Koberna questioned if the board could leave the size
open, and just indicated that the existing sign would be used, just moved around. Ivlr.
Rymarczyk strongly suggested the board mention that the applicant would be using two foot
three inch letters, (2'.03) in the motion. Mr. Bayaus indicated he was not in a position to
decrease the request. Mr. Rymarczyk suggested the applicants presently have identification in
place it might be better to table the request. Mr. Gareau indicated the board should just state in
the motion that the existing signage be reused and that, the & More will be placed under 3 day
Blinds. Mr. Bayaus suggested that, 3 Day Blinds indicated that if the variances were denied then
the existing sign would remain. No further comments were made.
T. Koberna motioned to approve 3 Day Blinds & More of 4687 Great Northern Blvd their
request for variance (1123.12). Which consists of a sign package, and that the following
variances be granted:
4) A 173.75 square foot variance for business unit signage, (Code permits 80'sq ft, applicant
requests 253.75sq ft), (1163.11 C).
5) A 3.6 foot variance for sign height, (Code permits 4'ft applicant requests 7.6'ft), (1163.12 A).
8
