it wasn't preinature because it should be in the back of their minds as to it is down the road.
Mr. Raig questioned the timina of the Library being completed. Mr. Garland guessed that it
was about two years away. He then suggested sitting down with Council and the Mayor to
ask them how far they want this board to go. The board is looking at this as a need for a
building of some type whether it is available now or in the immediate future. Or do they
need to look at a new building. There is also a senior committee that has got together and
one way to get a senior center built here is to get the senior citizens together and they will get
the darned thing passed. We can't pass a school levy, but all of the sudden we can pass a new
fire station levy and a new seniors building because the seniors want it. Mr. Raig agreed and
thinks they need to plug in there somewhere. Maybe they develop all the different options
that are out there for a facility. He doesn't know them all, but one could be the oId library,
one could be build something brand new someplace, and another could be so sornething with
the schools or take it to the new library. Maybe we have to put up all the different options
that are there. One is not do anything but yet find all the different types of locations that do
exist for cultural arts. Mr. Garland questioned if anyone had been to the new senior center
they built in Rocky River. They have an arts and crafts room on there along with other
roorns. He wasn't talking about the new memorial hall; he was talking about the building that
was built about three or four years ago. Mr. Raig indicated that another way to come up with
these ideas is to do some research and field trips to see what others have. How does this
board engage the coinmunity so that it becomes part of what they want to do too? It is partly
the board's job to do that. Mr. Thompson indicated that they need to find out what the people
in the community want. Mr. Garland suggested that some of the people in the community
think that they are being taxed to death right now, but they don't look at Westlake and some
of the other communities to see what they are paying. Mrs. App questioned if that means
they should explore the absolute cheapest or least expensive/complicated way of developing
arts prograins. Mr. Raig indicated that he doesn't think that the ]east costly is the best.
Ivgaybe in a couple years people will buy in on something that makes sense. If there is
collaboration between the School and the City, he believes a lot can be accomplished.
Seeing that only four of the seven board meinbers were present, Mr. Raig suggested doing a
draft of the goals and objectives because the other members will probably like to add to
thein. He reviewed the joals discussed tonight. Developing a plan of action, funding and
promotion (identifying sources of revenue), education, coordination and collaboration with
other groups, and establishing a community identity. He questioned if the Clerk could get
any and all information from the Vision Committee survey. The Clei-k replied that he would
gather all inforination possible.
Chairman Raig questioned if the date for the January meeting was set. The Clerk indicated
that the board is scheduled to meet on January 2, 2002, which is the first Wednesdaz of the
month. Mr. Raig indicated that was his anniversary date. He questioned if J-an. 9 would
work. Mr. Garland indicated that the PTA is having the jud?ing for the Reflections Contest.
Mr. Raig indicated that they would just leave the meeting date as Jan. 2nd and correspond. .
Chairman Raig indicated that at the last meeting they talked about how there has been a Faith
Communities Forum organized. There is a citizen's pledge that they created or formulated.
They say it aloud as a group before they begin their Director's meetings. He was wondering
if this board, as a group, would like to do it. The Faith Communities Forum is trying to think
4
