.?
,. .- ,
projram. Some of the students over there in the past years have had their art selected to be
sent down to Columbus to be on display. There are soine excellent kids over there with great
art teachers and he wouldn't want to lose that which is already started over there. Mr. Raig
questioned how does the board collaborate with them when you talk about educational
programs and reaching into the coirununity. Do all these things need a place to showcase? Is
that a central thing needed in order to accomplish all of this. Mrs. App indicated that it all
comes down to what a community wants to support. Mr. Garland suggested that he thinks
they need to display or do some of these things before the community sees a real need for a
central location. Mrs. App questioned if it was possible to include a small theater and gallery
space in the new library plans. Mr. Garland indicated that there would be extra meeting
rooms, So far as having a small performing theatre, is not in the plans as of now. It probably
is something one should begin to approach and see where they are going to see how far along
they are on the drawings. It is very simple to malce some adaptations in regards to space.
Mrs. App questioned if it wouldn't make sense to include everythirig on the new library land,
so that everything is in one central location. Rather than the community trying to renovate a
second space and trying to maintain a second space. The City would need serious personnel
to maintain the old library as a Cultural Arts Center. Mr. .'sarland indicated that he would
talk with Donna Schmeal, with the Library, to see how far alonc, they are with the plans. She
is aware of some of the things and of course, the City is putting together some of their own
plans for it also. He knows there is a little discrepancy bettiveen the City and the County
Library's Rep. over as to how the people were going to get in there. 1VIr. Thompson
questioned if the old library would just be a vacant building after they move out. Mr.
Garland indicated that there are three or four_people who have dibs on it already. There are
people at City Hall who would like to move their offices in there, since the City does legally
own the building. Then there are also some people in the school system that feel it would be
appropriate to move some offices in there. It has been mentioned that the Gity and the
School can come up with some sort of agreement or trade. The other thina that was
suggested was that it could be a Senior Center. Mr. Raig indicated that the school needed to
do some studying as to if the building was just gone. It could be school parking lot. Mr.
Garland indicated that the building was in good repair because the Library has kept it up. He
is involved with the Chainber of Commerce and there is lack of adequate meeting space in
this coinmunity. Mrs. App agreed. Mr. Garland commented that there is not a restaurant that
you can seat inore than one hundred people other than joing to the North Olmsted Party
Center. There is the Senior Center (Community Cabin) that can be utilized up to a point, but
there needs to be more meetina space in this community. Until a motel comes in a builds a
convention center and that is not beyond the realm of possibility. Mr. iZaig questioned if the
Radisson Hotel had meeting places. Mr. Garland replied that it couldn't seat more than one
hundred. Marriott can handle maybe fifty and the other ones can handle even less. Mrs. App
noted that the newly huilt Panera Bread has a meeting room that can handle about twenty-
five people. Mr. Garland noted that Manhattan Deli and Denny's can each handle about
thirty people, but the restaurants want you to buy food for an activity there. Independence
has a beautiful coinmunity center over there. Mrs. App questioned if anybody knew what the
outcome of the Vision 2000 committee. Mr. Garland replied that he has never seen a final
draft and thinks there is some question as to whether a final draft was ever completed. Mr.
Raig cominented that there were about 40 people who were on the comznittee. He questioned
if determining a need for a cultural arts facility is premature yet. Mr. Garland suggested that
3
