He
indicated that his name was spelled wronj in the last half of the minutes and also noted some
minor spelling corrections. G. Thompson seconded the motion and was unanimously
approved.
IiI. NEW BUSINESS:
Chairman Raig indicated that each board member was supposed to come up with what they
believed would be a good mission statement for the board in general.
Mrs. App indicated that she did not attempt to write one because she was confused about
what has already been written in the Cultural Arts Commission ordinance. She didn't know
how restricted this board was by these rules. Mr. Raig indicated that he had the same
problems. This board has been formed from that ordinance, but they have the power to re-
write or change what they feel is needed. Each inember submitted what they thought would
be a good mission statement and or ideas to help that mission statement. Mrs. Martindale
explained her thoughts on what should be done with the library after the new one has been
constructed. She believes it would make a good Cultural Arts Center. Mrs. Beach irrdicated
that she had under lined important newspaper clippings from the Westlife about the Westlake
arts council. Mr. Raig suggested that all the mission statements have the same type of words
in them like promote, encourage, and stimulate. He recommended the board put together a
mission statement tonight, so they can start coming up with more specific goals and
objectives. Mrs. App suggested using Mrs. Martindale's mission stateinent to get them
started. Mr. Raig questioned if visual and performance hit on all the arts. He suggested that
the phrase "created by its citizens" seems a little restricted. The board recessed to the dry
erase board to confer and decide upon a mission statement.
