number of inembers as well as stagger member's terms. The reason he suggest staggerin? the
terms is because at the end of the year the entire commission could be replaced, which would not
be right. When the information was placed in the paper there was quite a few residents that
responded. It is up to the Commission as to what they would Iike to do, but he would like the
Commission to think about his suggestions. He indicated that a Councilperson has suggested
turning tbe Senior Center into a Cultural A-ts Center and move the Senior Center into the
existing Library. This board may want to explore that idea, there has been a couple of ineetinQs
discussina the move, but has met opposition because the number of available parking places
could be an issue. Once the new Library is built and if the Cultural Arts moved into the existing
Library patrons of the Cultural Arts could park in the new Library parking lot.
1V1r. Garland suggested the board have their meetings the first Wednesday of each month. The
only month that would have to be changed is November, which could be held the third
Wednesday, November 21, 2001. All board members indicated that they could meet the first
Wednesday of the month.
R. Garland motioned to hold the Cultural Arts meetings the first Wednesday of each month with
a starting time of 7:30pm. The mation was seconded by B. App and unanimously approved.
Chainnan Raig indicated that the November meeting would be held Wednesday, November 21,
2001. The next meeting will take place Wednesday, September 5, 2001.
The Ivlayor indicated that there are grants available from the State of Ohio and the Commission
should probably set up a subcommittee to find those grants available. Mr. Garland reviewed that
Berea was currently in line for a Chautauqua activity grant, which is one of 14 Cities that applied
for the grant. The group brings in a tent and performs at area libraries and other sites within
Cuyahoga County. This would be the first one to be in the Cleveland area, the rest has been
further south in Ohio. W. Raig questioned if there were any members that would like to serve
on a subcommittee to attain grant moneys. W. Thompson suggested that he had currently
worked on finding jrants and would be wilIing to help. He reviewed that he was currently
working with other foundations appIying for grants so he may already have inforination that
could be helpful. Mrs. Martindale reviewed that she had not had a good experience with
applying for grants in the past. Mayor Musial suggested federal grants that could be applied for
and acquired. Mrs. 1VEartindale believed that getting federal money could take up to ten years to
receive. Mr. Garland cominented that there was money coming in every year from the Ohio Arts
Council and he believes that they grant money three times a year. Mrs. Martindale suggested
that at one time there was an Art Council in North Olmsted, which was, ran by Randy Jones and
his wife. They were able to get someone from the Ohio Arts Council to speak to them and the
representative suggested that to get the Ohio grant it would take about 3 years. The Mayor
indicated that the City has to start somewhere anywhere to get this going. Mr. Thompson
believes that there are many grants out there to apply for as there are many handed out. 3ust in
the past five years, the number of grants handed out has increased. He would be willinj to bring
in information that he has to help the board find available grant money. Mr. Raic, questioned
what would be needed to estabiish a subcommittee or set the subcommittee. Mayor Musial
indicated that the Chairman just needed to announce that he is creating a subcommittee to look
into securin? grants for the Cultural Arts Activities Commission. Mr. Raig announced that there
will be a subcommittee made up of three members they will be Mr. Garland, Mr. Thompson and
Mrs. App. Their committee wilt work on finding and applying for grants. The Ma.yor reviewed
2
