an article from the plain dealer that suggested that Strongsville was building a new Iibrary and
their City Council is considering conuerting the existing library into a Fine Art Center once the
new Iibrary is completed.
Mrs. Martindale suggested a speaker that she knows Reggie King, who is ahead of the Westlake
Arts Council would be a good speaker for the board to invite to address the board. She is not
suggesting that she be invited rijht away, however 1V?rs. King is very in sight fu11 and helped ?et
the Westlake center built.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
V. CDIvIlvIUNICATIONS:
There was discussion as to whether the sub cornmittees should be broken up into three
categories. Mr. Garland suggested that he could. Iook into state grants, Mrs. App could look into
federal grants and Mr. Thompson could research private arants. IVl?-. Thoinpson commented that
he has been working with the Ohio Art Council regarding receiving Iists of grants available.
Mrs. Kilbane questioned what type of grants the board would request. Mr. Garland suggested
that, that is what the subcommittee will find out. They will find out what grants are available
and how they can be used. Mrs. Kilbane questioned if the board needed to know ahead of time
what the money would be used on. Mr. Raig suggested ]ooking at what is available first, then
take it from there. Mrs, App raised the point that it would take a few meetings just to find out
what they would like to do. It would also be a good idea ta find out what type of Cultural Arts
things other municipalities are doin?. I?rs. Nfartindale questioned if the board could review a
layout of the community cabin as well as the library to compare the buildings. IVlayor Musial
believed that he could get layouts for the board members neart meeting. He suggested that the
existing Iibrary buildina as about 10,000 sq. ft. There has been talk about changing the library
into a senior center and turning existing senior center into cultural arts building. The existing
Iibrary will not be vacated until some time in 2003. The community cabin has been rented out
for almost every day of the year for 2002 as well as dates in 2003. There lias also been'
discussion regarding not having enough parking at the existing Iibrary. There is al'so thought to
just using the community cabin as meeting rooms that can -be rented out, there are quite a few
groups that da not have a place to meet. Mr. Raig questioned if either buildin? would fit what
the City needs for a Cultural Arts facility. Mrs. App's questioned when the library would start
being built. The Mayor reviewed that the city is in the process of obtaining the land needed to
build the new library. Mrs. App's questioned how Council would oversee the Cultural Art Board
and if Council would deterinine what they can and can not do. The Mayor indicated that he has
found that if an idea comes from a committee Council will try to work with the committee.
There has also been talk of expanding the recreation center to include the senior center. Senior
citizens are very active and want to play temlis swim and do other things. Mrs. Kilbane
questioned if there was a timeframe for finding a cultural art building. The mayor indicated that
the board would want to make a discussion in the beginning of the New Year some time. The
Mayor suggested that Mrs. Martindale designed a plan to use the existing library as the Cultural
Arts building and suggested that he would make a copy of it for the board members next
meeting. Mrs. Martindale reviewed her thoughts on what could be done with the existing library.
Mrs. Kilbane sujgested that the board would need to decide if it is going to be a local thing or
would the city rent out the center for other entertainment uses. There could be speakers, groups,
3
