not approve variance 42 for a second wall sign. He said whether it is the "S" for Speedway or the changeable copy.
It would eliminate variance #3. Mr. Kremzar asked if they could live with that. 1VIs. Radwanski said that Babies 'R
Us has a sign as well as a lot of advertisements in their windows. Mrs. Sergi asked if they could advertise on their
windows. Ms. Radwanski indicated they could do that, but it is not the look they are going for. Mr. Rymarczyk
said advertisement in the windows is temporary signage and some temporary signage is allowed. He pointed out
that Babies 'R Us is 400 feet back from the road and Speedway is right on the road. Mr. Konold said he does not
believe they would want signs all over the windows. Ms. Radwanski said that is why they have a reader board on
the building, so they can keep signage out of the windows. Mr. Rymarczyk asked if they are relocating the existing
flagpole. He asked if there is a chance to go with a smaller one that would comply with code as far as the height,
and the size of the flag. . Ms. Radwanski said they were asked specifically from the Planning Commission to
relocate the existing pole because it is the biggest flag and biggest pole in the city and they want to keep it. She
pointed out they were going to get rid of it and donate it to the city. Mrs. Sergi mentioned the new library would
need a flag. Mrs. Sergi said her only concern is with the reader board. She said if one could be eliminated or the
size reduced a bit, it would help. It would not be advertising the company name but other products. Ms.
Radwanski said she would rather reduce the sign than eliminate it totally. She said they cannot reduce the "S" on
die door. Mrs. Sergi said if they reduce the reader board to 5x6 it would eliminate variance #3. Ms. Radwanski
confirmed that.
W. Kremzar made a motion to grant Speedway, 26516 Lorain Rd., the request for variance (1123.12), which
consists of a new sign package and that the following variances be granted with the amendment that request #3 is
deleted and the reader board is reduced to 5 x 6:
1. A 10 foot variance for a flagpole closer to the front property line then code permits, (code requires 45',
applicant shows 35'), section (1163.32 (d)).
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 section (1163.25), (1163.27 (a)), (1163.24 (a)), (1139.07) and (1163.32 (a)
(e) (d)). Note: Flag size and pole height are estimated based on reasonable estimations from the Building
Department. The motion was seconded by N. Sergi and unanimously approved. Variances granted as
amended.
7). Great Lakes Piano; 26800-26804 Lorain Rd.:W1aD-1
Request for variance (1123.12). A 5 foot variance for a ground sign too close to the right of way (code requires 5 ft., applicant shows 0),
section (1163.26 (b)).
Note: Total square footage includes 13-sq. ft. of 3-inch red neon stripe on building. Stripe is 52 ft. long.
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 section (1163.24 (a)), and (1163.26 (b)).
Vice Chainnan Kremzar called all interested parties forward to review the request. Mr. Gallagher, the owner and
tenant, came forward to be swonl in. Mr. Gallagher indicated he submitted changes to the Planning Commission.
He showed the board members a diagram of the site and said they reduced the number of variances by making the
sign change requested by the Planning Commission. They originally had a red stripe at the top of the structure,
