- ?.
suggested thinking of a nice way to word it. She has found with tickets, and things for plays, if
you ask for a donation with no amount next to it, you get better results than if you ask for a
specific amount. Mrs. Rote asked if they have established that they can take in money. She
indicated she will contact the law department to determine if they can collect money. Mrs.
Martindale asked that she do that before she sends out the letter. She asked if the board could
collect dues. She was at Community Council and they collected dues from members. Mrs. App
indicated they are their own entity; they are not part of the city. Mr. Raig said this raises
interesting questions because if they do want to send some communications do they have to get
approval from the city. Mrs. Rote asked if they would ask for a line item, or perhaps grants. She
said the Human Resources Director is the one that puts out articles and looks for grants. 1V1rs.
Beach said the problem with grants is, again, we have no history, we have nothing that says this is
what we've done and this is what we're going to do. She believes grants would be difficult to get
and Mrs. App agreed. Mr"s. App asked if the board would want to jump into an event to bring
attention to the fact that there is a Cultural Arts Commission. Mrs. Kilbane said the first step
would be to find out about the money before we do anything. We should go ahead with the
library tour and the stage, and come back at the beginning of next month with that information,
and then move forward. She said a blurb in the newsletter is a good idea. Mrs. Martindale said it
will go out to a lot of people, although they are not all in North Olmsted but it would still help.
She suggested putting in a separate piece of paper for the board. Mrs. Rote will get some dates
from the people at the library and will let them know when the regular meetings are to see if they
can come to do a presentation. NIr. Raig asked if there was any other business. Mr. Thompson
said he is the vice president in charge of displays for the Lakewood Art League. They are putting
a display up at The Beck Center for a Neil Simon play they are having there. Following that, he
has a display going to the Euclid Public Library. He thinks maybe he could get the board to
display some pictures. He has a 1VIay show coming up at Lakewood Hospital so they are tied up
right now but after that they would have some time. He suggested that possibly they could put up
a display someplace, using the contact list they just got, and get soine organizations to come out.
Mrs. 1Vlartindale asked about the Great Northern Corporate Center where they used to have
displays. Mr. Thompson said they could do it in conjunction with what is already going on to
show we are an active organization. Mrs. Kilbane suggested doing something in the summer,
perhaps in tents. Mr. Thompson said there is a big room in the library. Mrs. Rote suggested Old
Town Hall. Mrs. Beach said you would have to count on a motivated audience for that. Mrs.
Kilbane said you have to set up a time so people will come out to see it. Mrs. Martindale said the
shows at the corporate center were crowded. Mrs. Beach added they were terrific shows and
asked what happened to them. Mrs. Martindale indicated that Mxs. Biskind pushed those events.
Mr. Thompson said he has screens for the art show that they used at the hospital. They had about
a hundred pictures and people came from all over and really enjoyed it. The screens are helpful.
He added, we have to promote ourselves somehow. Mrs. Martindale said the Community Center
has terrible decorations and she suggested hanging paintings there because people have meetings
there and they would see the pictures all the time. Mrs. Martindale then had to leave the meeting
but asked for a line for her newsletter. Mrs. Rote suggested including something like the "new
Cultural Arts Commission is looking forward to the performance of the Dover Players." Mrs.
Beach suggested inviting some input. Mrs. Martindale indicated she will write something. Mr.
Raig said it might be good to do a display at the old library. He said that since they 'are talking
about doing something at the new library, it would be nice to do something with the old library
first. They could then see how much it would be improved at the new facility.
Mrs. Martindale pointed out book stacks could be a problem. Mr. Raig said they will check that
out at the end of the month.
4
