They will meet by the doors to the right side of the auditorium. Mr. Raig said they need to
contact someone at the library as well. Mrs. Beach offered to call the library to set up the tour
there at 4:30, following the middle school visit. She said she will find out who to contact and
make the arrangements. Mrs. Beach then asked about the new library. She was very interested in
what she read in the board's minutes about this project. She said it seems if they are going to
jump into that situation, now would be the time. It seems so ideal because you don't have to build
a structure and in terms of an arts facility, you get passive traffic in terms of gallery space. She
asked if they are planning a fiill basement in the library. She also asked if they could make
meeting rooms so they can be opened up to a theater space, and perhaps there could be a stage.
She would like to know exactly what they have in mind and if it's something that could be
adapted; then you are not talkirig about new money. NIrs. App agreed and would like to see if it's
possible to include gallery space, theater space and meeting space. Mrs. Beach asked who is
working on it, who could be contacted. Mrs. Rote indicated that the Mayor is the contact and he
has been working with the people from the library. She does not believe an architect has been
chosen. She said there has been a conceptual plan submitted. Mr. Raig said a conversation with
the mayor would be appropriate. He also indicated there is a partnership with the county and they
have their rules, so they should talk to the Mayor about it. Mrs. Beach mentioned Avon Lake
library having a children's discovery area attached to the library. She said there are even coffee
bars being attached to libraries today. Libraries are becoming more of a community meeting
place. Mr. Raig asked if she thought a theater could be attached. She said it is worth
investigating. Mrs. App indicated that the Westlake library that is being rebuilt, prior to starting
that, they had a raised stage where she has seen performances. Mrs. Kilbane said that Avon Lake
and Brunswick have added.1000 seat auditoriums to their libraries. Mr. Raig indicated he will
send a note to the Mayor to see if they can explore how Arts can be incorporated into the library
project. Mrs. Rote suggested that representatives from the library join in a meeting and give a
presentation of what they are looking at, and then the board could throw out some of their ideas
too. Mrs. Kilbane said perhaps the Mayor could attend this meeting. Mrs. Rote said she will find
out who could represent the library. Mrs. App asked about the idea of sending out requests for
charter members of the Cultural Arts Commission to raise some seed money for an event they
might want to do. Mrs. Beach remarked that she received the Chamber list and she had made
some notes. She asked the group to look over the list and let her know if there are any other
contact names or organizations that they could tap into. In terms of mailing lists, even though
there is no money for a mailing, they may be able to use this list. She said she thought they could
send a standard release and hope that an organization would put it in their newsletter. Mrs. Beach
said there are other publications, i.e.. the Rec. Center catalog, Mayor's report, which they could
slip something into so they would not have to have funds. Mrs. App asked if there are any funds
even to send out letters. Mrs. Beach said we haven't done anything yet, so to ask if someone
wants to be a charter member may be a little premature. She said we'd be asking for inoney based
on nothing. N1r. Thompson asked how much we would need. Mrs. Martindale said at least
$500,000 for an auditorium. Mrs. Beach said this is just seed money to start some programming
so we can have some history and can have some credibility. She said if we had some money we
can begin to do something rather than just talk about it and then get some feedback from the
community. She added that maybe some of these events could become self-supporting. Mr.
Thompson said you could send a letter but it's not as effective as if you got on the phone and
started talking to people. You need a pitch. There are about 25 people on the list. You could ask
for a small amount, say $10, to get us going, to use as seed money.
Mr. Thompson said it would be nice to send a letter and follow up with a call. Mrs. Martindale
said she is sending a letter out anyway so she could include something for the board. She
3
