REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF NIlNUTES: The Landmarks Commission minutes from the
November 11, 2002 meeting have been submitted for approval.
Mr. Dubowski pointed out that on the first page of the minutes it indicates the library construction is to
begin in February 2004, when in fact it should be 2003.
K. O'Rourke made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected. The motion was seconded by
T. Dubowski and unanimously approved.
III. NEW BUSINESS:
• Certificate of Appropriateness for Dudley & Mary Beckrest, 25346 Butternut Ridge Road. The proposal
consists of replacing windows with alternations. Mrs. Lord welcomed the Beckrest's to the ineeting along
with Mark Capitoni of Stanek Windows. Chairman Lord mentioned there was some discussion about the
proposal at the last meeting. She explained that the board has the charge to represent the historic integrity
of the district and to work with homeowners to that end. Mr. Beckrest shared some photos with the board
members. Mrs. Beckrest explained they would like to make a section of the home a four seasons room.
There are not actual windows there. They have storms. They are making it useable space. Mr. Beckrest
pointed out the computer rendering is not quite accurate on the size. The windows were not even when
originally put in. The new ones will be more symmetrical. He said the front windows all have the glass
on the outside, like the casement windows. He thinks it will look nicer architecturally to do three equal
sections and it will tie in with the other windows. Mrs. Lord asked when the house was built. Mr.
Beckrest replied that he believes it was 1918. Mrs. Lord asked if that portion of the house was originally
a porch. Mr. Beckrest indicated he is not certain. Mrs. Lord said there are other homes on the street that
have a siinilar kind of porch, a section that was originally an open porch. Mr. Beckrest said he knows it
was enclosed in 1978 because it was written there when they took the paneling off. Mr. Lang asked if
there is an entrance door from the porch into a room in the house. Mrs. Beckrest said there is a fireplace
and two sinall doors. Mrs. Davis shared some of the history of her home and others in the area. Mrs.
Lord said there are a number of houses on Butternut Ridge, including the Beckrest home, that are the
California bungalow style, which was not typical of the area. Mr. Lang asked about the style of the
proposed windows. He asked if what they have now is original. Mr. Beckrest said he was told they are
original. Mr. Lang raised concern about using casement style windows. He said casement windows were
not typical for this type of home. He asked if any consideration was given to double hung windows
which could also appear to be transom style. He said with double hung windows there would be a line
across that would be similar to the two double hung windows that are upstairs. He added that if they
wished, they could also get mullions that would replicate the living room and the other windows. He said
what they have appears to be replacement windows. Mrs. Beckrest indicated they do have one casement
window, which is off the kitchen. Mr. Lang said the board is most interested in those parts that are
