REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES: The Landmarks Commission minutes of the
April 8, 2002 meeting have been submitted for approval. Mr. Lang asked for a correction to page
6 and Mrs. VanAuken pointed out that the Commission was to meet at Old Town Hall and not at
the Porter House. Mr. Lang made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected. The motion was
seconded by Mrs. VanAuken and unanimously approved.
III. NEW BUSINESS:
s Certificate of Appropriateness for Frances Heil; 25427 Butternut Ridge Rd.
Mrs. Lord asked the Heil's to share their plans for their home in the Historic District. Mrs. Heil
explained that they would like to build a 16' x 24' shed in their backyard. She referred to the
specification sheet and indicated the only difference from what is marked on the sheet is they
would have 8' side walls instead 6.6 because there is not a spec. sheet available for that size. Mrs.
Lord asked if the driveway goes toward the shed. She asked for confirmation that there is an
existing above ground pool before you would get to the shed. Nirs. Heil confirmed that. Mrs. Van
Auken asked how they would get to the shed since the drive does not go down to the shed. Mrs.
Heil indicated it will be part of the yard and will be used to store equipment. Mrs. Lord asked
how old the home is. IVIrs. Heil indicated the house is 50 years old. Mrs. O'Rourke arrived at the
meeting and Mrs. Lord filled her in on the Heil's request. Mrs. Lord pointed out that as a
Commission they have taken the position that utility buildings that are set back and not visible
from the street do not take away from the historic nature and have been approved. Mrs. Davis
made a motion to approve the certificate of appropriateness to build a shed to be located to the rear
of the pool, shed to be constructed per the spec sheet with the exception of the 8-foot sidewalls.
The motion was seconded by Mr. Lang and unanimously approved. 1VIrs. Lord mentioned this
request will now go back to the Building Department and the Heil's will need to pick up their
permit to proceed. Mrs. Lord informed Mr. Dailey that anyone that lives within the historic
district must come before the Landmarks Commission before the Building Department can grant a
permit. It is one of the obligations of the Landmarks Commission. She mentioned it pertains to
any district home or designated landmark in the city. She pointed out that the district goes from
Butternut, from sign to sign, and there are three designated landmarks; the Old Town Hall, the
Universalist Church, and the Barton Road Congregational Church. Mrs. Lord mentioned she had
not received a call back from the realty firm handling the sale of the Barton Road property. She
said they may now have to go through the new owners to gain access to the church. Mrs. Lord
