4
!
-` ?
another S.I.T.E.S. student. Mr. Lang said there could be two but it depends on how many students ask
to work here and whether or not Mr. Copeland has work for them to do. In the past Mr. Copeland has
not been able to divide his time satisfactorily to oversee the work of the S.I.T.E.S students. In the
absence of someone from the Commission to oversee the Landmarks requests and give a student the
direction and supervision that is called for, Mr. Copeland will not be able to do it. Mr. O'Malley
asked if there is a sample of the brochure available. There was further discussion about the
information in the pamphlet. Mr. Lang pointed out on the last page it indicates it was printed in
January 1980 courtesy of the Welcome Wagon, Friends of Horizon After School Center, and the
Landmarks Commission. He pointed out there were contributors. There was discussion about how to
pay for a new brochure. Mrs. VanAuken said most people would not want to walk the whole length
of Butternut Ridge because it would be too tiring so they thought they would divide it into three
sections where there would be a parking lot available, perhaps Butternut School, or the junior high.
Mr. O'Malley said what he is envisioning is a comprehensive, accurate, detailed historical account of
each house that they are cataloging on the one hand, and on the other a highly marketable, glossy-
finished, photographic tri-fold rendering of selected examples of the district. There was discussion
about having information available at homecoming. Mr. Lang brought up that he heard there was
quarry stone in the basement of two of the homes on Butternut Ridge that are slated to be demolished.
He indicated he went to the Service Director and they discussed the possibility of salvaging the stone.
Mr. Lang informed him he was interested in seeing it to make sure it is something they would be
interested in recommending that the City preserve and pull out of the demolition contract. He stopped
late last week and made an appointment to go to the homes to see the quarry stone. He went to the
homes with Mr. Deichmann, the City Engineer. They inspected two homes; the Dyer home at 27488
Butternut and the Dunfee home. Mr. Lang indicated he spoke with Mr. Dunfee who said that if they
can salvage the stone it would be fine. Mr. Dunfee said the stone is phenomenal. It is painted on the
inside of the basement but it stands about three feet above grade and there is a good five or six feef
below grade. It is beautifully carved quarry stone. Mr. Lang was informed by Mr. Deichmann that
the basements and quarry stone were pulled from the demolition contract so that whomever is
supposed to deinolish the homes is to preserve the quarry stone. It will be removed carefully and
placed in a site to be selected by the City for storage until the use it determined. Mr. Lang asked if
Mr. O'Malley could verify that the contract was changed. Mr. O'Malley indicated that Mr. Deichmann
would be writing the specifications for the demolition contract. The Law Director would oversee the
contracts in terms of notifying the bidders of their obligations. He said it sounds like the board
intervened at the appropriate time. Mr. Lang said he is under the impression that the contract had
been written. Mr. O'Malley said the contracts are written by the Law Director, Mr. Lang said he
envisions these stones to be perfect for locating in the park for the library. There was mention of the
old homestead gathering. Mr. Corel] attended and said it was very nice. There were 50-75 people in
attendance and it went quite well.
VII. ADJOURNMENT: P. Barker made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:50 p.m. The motion was
seconded by L. VanAuken and unanimously approved.
Corell YSafe Asst. Clerk of Commissions, Annie Kilbane
8
