Mr. Lang pointed out that being a CLG would certainly help with getting money. Mr.
Barker pointed out that Mr. Dailey informed him the CLG issue is moving through committee.
Because they have to change the charter, it has be voted on and put on the ballot in November. OLD BUSINESS:
-* Status of Landmark for Springvale - Report by M. Davis and J. Lang
Mr. Lang indicated that he and Mrs. Davis went to the Cuyahoga County Archives to research
Springvale as best they could. They were particularly interested in the dance hall. They believe the
approximate date the building was erected to be 1922. It shows up on the 1923 tax book. He said it
was built by the Biddulph family and remained in that name until some time down the road when it
became Springvale. Mrs. Davis said the dates she received from Rose Biddulph were all verified by
the archives. Mr. Corell said that after the last meeting he and Mrs. Lord had their Saturday meeting
and they noticed on a map that was marked up that there was a trolley car stop on Butternut Ridge
about where the library is to go in. It was known as Rice's Cemetery. This raised the question of
whether there is still a family plot in that area and would it create a problem with the library going in.
Mr. Corell indicated they looked into it and he wound up talking with Todi Bretts, who he believes is
the oldest living Rice, and lives out on Butternut Ridge. She told the story that was told to her by her
grandparents of the five children who died of diphtheria and were buried back there. They were able
to ascertain that the graves were moved, apparently in 1882 when Susan Mandana Rice passed away
at age 53. It is noted on the City records that the remains were moved to Butternut Ridge Cemetery.
The Mayor was notified of a potential problem and then notified there is no need to be concerned
about a private cemetery in that area now. Mr. Corell indicated he brought it up just so they can
formalize what they know. He will write a letter to send on the Mayor so it can become part of the
official file that the City was made aware of it and did look into it and the site is clear. Mrs. O'Rourke
asked if anyone had gone down to the cemetery. Mr. Corell replied he did visit the cemetery. He
added it was a potential problem but the Landmarks Commission did its job.
• Review of Self-Guided Walking Tour brochure
Mrs. VanAuken indicated the members should all have seen the folder that was used back when they
celebrated the bicentennial. It was put together by Mrs. Lord and a friend. It has a lot of good
information but it needs some revisions and updating. Mrs. O'Rourke mentioned she volunteered to
work on the tour but she asked where they would get the information to update the brochure. Mrs.
VanAuken said perhaps they would have to go to the records that people already have. She said City
Hall should have some of the information. Mrs. VanAuken commented that she brought in the book
that the Boy Scout had put together. She asked if anyone else wanted to take a look at it. Mrs. Davis
indicated she will take the book next to review it. Mrs. VanAuken mentioned she did not take any
notes on the book. She thought it would be better for everyone to read it. Mr.. Corell asked if there is
a S.I.T.E.S student that is assigned to them who might be interested in helping with the tour. Mrs.
Davis said she believes they do not have a student now. Mrs. VanAuken pointed out there may be a
student working on the oral interviews and it would not be a good idea to take him away from that.
She said she would be willing to work with someone.
