? what the engiileers gave them. They went through a series of fixtures ranging from what the board has all
the way through the traditional shoot boxes that you see at the mall. They threw those out because it was
not approprial:e for the library site. They also got the option of a globe type fixture however you cannot
control lightirig cutoffs and lighting levels at property lines with those. Spice Constantino threw out that
option too. The plan they ended up with gives them the ability to have optics that will allow them to
control light levels along the property lines, which will help since there are residents on two sides that are
concerned about that. He walked the board inembers through the plan. The SA fixture is the bulk of the
lighting throLlghout the entire site. It goes all the way from the entrance on Butternut and it brings you
into the site. It is the lighting in the parking lot, and it is the lighting that takes you out to Lorain Road.
The differenc;e between the SA fixture and the SB fixture is the asymmetric optics which allow the
cutoffs along the property lines. He mentioned the poles are 14 feet high. They went with that in an
effort to keep the scale down to more of a pedestrian level. Mrs. O'Rourke asked if 14 feet is standard for
the poles. Mr. Hunsicker indicated the highest the poles will stand is 14 feet. He said there are two light
poles in the c;enter of the parking lot and they will have concrete coming up so they will use a 12 foot
pole. They viill all be the same level. The pole they chose has the fluted bottom and the straight shaft at
the top. As a design team they talked about it and went with that choice but if Landmarks as a group
likes one of the other choices, they would certainly entertain that. He said the poles will be black. He
said one of the things their engineer brought to their attention was they could put a finial on top and they
have left that: open. He said their choice was not necessarily to do that. They wanted to keep it simple
but once again, as a group, if they want to go that way, that is not a problem. Mr. Hunsicker indicated the
poles will be equipped, at the library's request, with some power at the poles so if something needs to be
plugged in the power is already out there. It is not a problem to add in the extra power. Mrs. VanAuken
asked why t:hey might need or use the power outside. Mr. Hunsicker explained it would be for
maintenance purposes, or perhaps for decorations, or an event in the parking lot where there may be a
need for electricity. He referred to the plans for the light fixture they intend to use for the building. It is
actually part of the building. Mrs. VanAuken asked if it will throw light up along the side of the building.
Mr. Hunsicker indicated it is like a house light in that it throws a circle of light. He said they are flood
lighting the building itself, at the corners, the main entrance, and the Lorain Rd. side. They want to
highlight those two parts of the architecture. It will be up to the library system to determine how to
control the timers. A person in attendance asked if it will be attached to some kind of timing mechanism.
Mr. Hunsicker said it will be timer-oriented. He said the light fixtures in the parking lot will have banner
brackets to allow the library or the city to promote different events or occasions of significance. They
will be straight brackets with two arms coming off of the side. Mr. Hunsicker indicated there are
companies that produce standard signs for the major holidays and also custom signs. 1VIrs. Creadon
mentioned tlnat today is Veterans' Day and in a case like this, they would ask the library to put up
flags/banners to highlight Veterans' Day. At Christmas time, they could put up something to highlight a
special program. Mr. Hunsicker said the walkway around the green space has the same kind of pole
lighting. Tl-iat was intentional to keep continuity with the rest of the site. He said there is some extra
lighting on the site in the plaza area, in the green area, and in the reading garden up at the front. They
will use the Uollard lights. They are the SD fixtures. They are simple and understated. The other options
are included in the packets. They did look at those options but they are more expensive. Mrs. VanAuken
asked about the light height. Mr. Hunsicker indicated they are 42 inches. Mrs. O'Rourke asked if they
are incorporated in the landscaping. Mr. Hunsicker replied they are in landscape beds in the plaza area
and in the friont. They do not want them in the walkway. They have seen snow plows run into them, and
children run into them as well. Mr. Barker asked how many are in the plaza and in the other areas. Mr.
Hunsicker said there 8 in the green plaza and in the front there will be 8 as well. Their concern was with
the public seating being there that it be lit up enough but not lighting upward. He said the flood lights are
not fancy. 7'hey will be in landscaped beds lighting up the corners. They will also be located at the sign
along Lorain and at the sign on Butternut. You won't see the fixture itself just the light that it produces.
Someone in attendance asked if the light produced from them will generate a yellow glow or a bright
light. Mr. Hunsicker said all the lighting on the site is a white light. They like to stay with the metal
2
