.,
Mr. Robert Sharp 25417 Butternut Ridge Road - Applicant is seeking a permit for an addition
Mr. Sharp indicated the address is actually 25407 Butternut Ridge Road. He then presented the
architectural plans for the proposed addition. He said it will be a 15 x 21 foot addition off the back of
the house, which will be a kitchen. It will match the structure there now in color, siding, and roofing. It
will look like an original part of the house when they are finished. NIr. Barker asked if it will be visible
froin Butternut. Mr. Sharp replied it will not. He said driving west on Butternut, east of Great Northern
Blvd., on the corner lot looking to the backyard, you may be able to see the side of it. Mr. Lang pointed
out there is a fence along Route 252 and the applicant's house. Mr. Sharp indicated that is his fence.
Mrs. VanAuken asked about the siding. Mr. Sharp said it is aluminum siding. The original siding was
8 inch lap siding and when he had the house sided years ago that is what he put on it. He put 8 inch
siding to match it with the individual corner pieces instead of the single piece to have it maintain the
original look. Mrs. Lord asked how old the home is. Mr. Sharp said he believes it was built in 1943.
Mrs. Lord applauded the applicant for going the extra mile to get the same kind of siding. Mr. Sharp
said he wants it to look right. He does not want it to look like an obvious addition that does not look
original to the house. Mr. Dubowski said the plan indicates it will be 8 inch vinyl siding. Mr. Sharp
said no, you cannot get 8 inch vinyl siding. It is aluminum. There was further discussion about siding
and getting the texture to match.
T. Dubowski made a motion to approve the certificate of appropriateness for Robert Sharp of
25407 Butternut Ridge Road. The motion was seconded by P. Barker and unanimously approved.
Mr. Lang said he would like to add an item to New Business. He thinks they need to submit a budget to
Council for next year. Mr. Barker said he has a copy of last year's budget on his computer. Mr. Lang
said they will increase the budget from last year. Mr. Yager asked what the budget allows the
coinmission to do. Mr. Lang said it allows them to join organizations that support their activities such
as the Alliance for Historic Preservation, The Cleveland Restoration Society, and Ohio Historical
Society. They are organizations the coinmission needs to be in contact with to help them pursue their
work. On the local level, since the City is on a"zero based budget" they do have to include such
mundane items as postage in the budget. He said they also have a film budget and in the past have
purchased computer discs. They may just request a digital camera to pursue their own photographic
endeavors. They purchase plaques for that program. Mr. Lang said he found 12 plaques down in the
vault so they do not need any for the moment but they will need the date strips that get attached. Mr.
Yager asked if there is money in the budget to have someone come into the city to lecture on how to get
better at maintaining the older buildings. Other cities do that. He mentioned the building that was
knocked down in order to put up CVS. It was unbelievable to him they would knock down one of the
true historic buildings in town. At some point, the commission has to put its foot down and let its voice
be heard. He then mentioned Rebecca's. It seems there comes a point where they just flat out say, "no."
The point is how to salvage such building and creatively solve things. Mrs. Lord said they have had
various amounts of money in the budget in the past and they could put that in the budget. There are
resources through some of the groups they belong to that could be accessed. Mr. Yager said it is
amazing how information is a great resource. A national expert that comes to our town, to discuss what
exists and how to maintain it, would have a lot to say. When the city asks for experts to tell them what
to do financially, they get someone. When they need something on the safety forces, they get
somebody. Someone should be brought here to help them. He said the corner of Porter and Lorain is a
critical historical corner and it is worth salvaging. He suggested Halleen put its offices there instead of
knocking it down to put up something of far lesser value. The board members informed Mr. Yager that
Halleen has said the corner will be turned back to its natural state. Mr. Yager said he was asked to be a
member of Landmarks but he was not given anything about what the goal of the commission is or what
the district is, or any of the criteria. Mrs. Lord said they need to get him a file. Mr. Lang said their
chapter is 165 of the city code and it provides them with their operating procedures. Mr. Barker said the
CVS building is what sparked the additions to chapter 165. That has helped give them "little teeth".
The board tries to make the process as easy as they can without upsetting a lot of people. There are
2
