' juts out. He is not sure he can get the same exact brick to wrap the skirting of the porch. He would
consider building that up out of block and then pouring a slab very similar to what is there now. He
could use a square stone that would match in color, accent the brick, and even use that in the two
columns to support the front. He is not certain if he will have the funds to do all that. Mr. Stalter said
that he understands it is the original roof. He will do the work himself and will put down two layers of
ice shield. Mr. Lang said as far as the brick work is concerned, Mr. Stalter should not have too much
trouble finding a match. He said he gave Mr. Stalter some material to read over which will give hiin
some guidance. He seems to be within the perimeters of what is recommended. He said when Mr.
Stalter makes a determination as to the shingle, he can return to the board. If at the same time he has
made a determination that he can afford to do the porch, he would recommend that be presented at the
same time. Mr. Lang asked if anyone sees a problem with the proposed exterior change. Mrs.
VanAuken asked if the work will change the house so that it no longer represents the kind of house that
was built then. Mrs. Davis said she does not think it will. She said there are brick ranches from the
1950's that have porches. There was discussion of other areas in Northeast Ohio that have homes
similar to Mr. Stalter's. Mr. Stalter asked how the board feels about stone versus brick. Mr. Barker said
he sees brick as a better choice. It will look new initially but it will age and blend with the house. Mr.
Stalter asked if the board has a preference with siding. He asked if it would be acceptable to use vinyl
siding that resembled wood. He said this would be on the facing if he follows through with all his
plans. He can either put a roof there without anything inside and have it finished on both sides of the
roof, or enclose it. Mr. Barker said if it is affordable, he would recommend enclosing the porch. He
said the Commission is basically anti-siding but they can't fight that really hard. He said he thinks if
W. Stalter put cedar around the garage, he should bring it up front to compliment it and blend
everything. W. Lang said if he reads the standards carefully, they recommend against any artificial
siding other than wood. Mr. Stalter thanked the board members for some good information. Mr. Barker
said the board appreciates that he came to seek information before any work has started. There have
been problems in the past when work has started and there are conflicts with the charge of the
Commission. W. Stalter left one of the sketches with the board members. Mr. Lang thanked Mr.
Stalter for coming before the board and said they are looking forward to working with him. He said the
next step would be the shingle sample. Mr. Stalter said he has some spare brick samples he can bring as
well. He asked if there are any thoughts on the color of shingle. Mr. Lang said that he would want to
make it as unobtrusive,as he can. A brown shade would work. He said the darker the color, the more
heat absorption he will get, and the hotter the second floor gets. It would not be out of line to have the
lighter color that he has now, the silver, because that is in keeping with the time period and it would also
make the house stand out more.
Timothv Ulewicz. 26775 Butternut Ridge - Resident would like to unofficially discuss preliminary
plans for a second story addition to his home.
