REVIEEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES: The minutes from the Cultural Activities
meeting held January 7, 2004 have been submitted for approval.
B. Martindale motion to approve the Cultural Activities January 7, 2004 minutes as
written. B. App seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved.
III. NEW BUSINESS:
Mr. Garland reviewed that this spring Cuyahoga County taxpayers would be voting on a
property tax for Art Groups Working Hard. He is not sure how big of a project it is but it
would be nice to find a way to tap into those funds to help the commission introduce the
cultural arts to North Olmsted. Mrs. Martindale reviewed that there would also be an
operating levy placed on the ballet for the Cuyahoga Library system.
Mrs. App discussed the e-mail from Mrs. Beach regarding requesting Council allow the
Commission to receive funds from the sale of the old library for cultural activities. The
Commission felt that they should contact Council members individually to get more
responses. It was decided that Mrs. App would send each Council member, City Planner and
Mayor an e-mail and then each Commissioner would follow up with their Councilperson
individually. The Clerk was asked to provide the Commissioners with each Councilperson's
e-mail addresses.
Mr. Garland introduced Artist Gerald Yustick a North Olmsted resident to the commission.
He invited Mr. Yustick to attend the commissions meetings as he is hoping Mr. Yustick can
give the commission guidance, as he is a member of the Board of the Berea Fine Arts
organization. Mr. Yustick indicated that the Berea Fine Arts is quite involved with the City
and they use the little red schoolhouse for a mixture of theater and fine arts. Their
organization has raised quite a bit of money and they own their building. He thought that the
old North Olmsted library was going to become the Cultural Art building. In his opinion,
none of the local libraries displays a lot of artwork. The Commission voiced that they would
have the clerk pass along Mr. yustick's ideas to City Council. Mr. Yustick reviewed that his
artwork is placed in an art gallery and the manager works at the Cleveland Art Museum the
City may want to talk to him. Discussion regarding funds set aside to purchase art for the
new library took place and the commission discussed holding one of their meetings at the
library once it opens. The clerk indicated that she would have the print showing the layout of
the new library at the commissions next meeting. Mr. Yustick reviewed that the Berea
group had over 100 members and average at least 30 or more at each meeting.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
