Carol Sanford, Bookkeeper, has also instituted a procedure for notifying the Cashier Booth when
supervisors are requesting vacation, comp time, etc. which may alter the normal supervisory schedule.
After the requests are signed they are then transferred to the Cashier Booth to be noted in the main
log book.

Donna Szalay, Program Supervisor, recently published a second issue of the Lifeguard News to
continue this unique method of communications with the Pool Staff. Highlights for this issue are the
delayed opening of the outdoor pool, uniform requirements, schedules for lane lines, time card
procedures to ensure appropriate pay, lifeguard certificate verification and rest period procedures.

F
acilities
The indoor tennis courts suffered a severe electrical malfunction in the main switch box for the lighting
system. Many of the breakers were original units which had deteriorating connections. Unfortunately
several of the necessary replacement breakers were not easily identified by electrical supply houses
and extra time was needed to locate the necessary supplies. A quote for a complete upgrade was
considered but was not performed due to the uncertainty that it would meet the needs of a new
lighting system which is being specified in the Capital Improvement program. As such, a
comprehensive replacement of the damaged breakers was performed and a safety inspection
conducted. Over the winter Tom Stein, Maintenance Supervisor, will investigate what type of
improved electrical panel will meet our future needs and the new system will be installed the next time
we experience difficulties with the existing electrical panel.

P
rograms
The 4th of July Bike Parade and Picnic was another huge success attracting well over 300
participants. The volunteer staff included not only City Council members but also our very own Park
and Recreation Advisory Board members. The parade went off without a hitch and the picnic was well
received. Over 1,200 hot dogs were consumed and there were very few leftovers remaining. The
organization of the children’s games in cooperation with the Community Council went very well. The
layout of the games with the special age specific activities being held adjacent to the game area
enabled parents to be in two places at the same time with their children.

The 18th consecutive N.O.S.O. Cup was also held on the July 4th weekend which kept the Park
Maintenance Staff really moving. The N.O.S.O. Cup is recognized as one of the premier tournaments
of the season by Umbro and USA Soccer . The various sites utilized for this event were North
Olmsted Park, Barton-Bradley Soccer Fields, and the High School Soccer Fields. Over 110 teams
competed from around the region, nation, and from Europe and Canada. This year the Parks and
Recreation Department made a consorted effort to accommodate N.O.S.O. in the presentation of this
special event. Park Maintenance Staff were encouraged to assist in all possible means to make the
event a success for the entire community.

The Junior Olympics program lead by Michelle Sanborn, Program Leader, had several finalists in the
regional qualifier despite the fact that the North Olmsted boys finished sixth out of eleven teams and
the girls finished ninth out of eleven teams. There was only one finalist in the 9 to 10 year old group

2
