Commission Meeting
February 12, 1997
Page Two

A motion was made by Mrs. Hayes to keep the same meeting date and time, the second
Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The motion was seconded by Mr. Scott and approved
unanimously.

There was some discussion regarding the terms of the Commission members and Mr. Dolansky
stated that he and Mrs. Scott had been working on compiling a revised schedule for all terms. He
stated that the overview should be completed prior to the March meeting.

Approval of Minutes:
Mr. Gardner asked the members to review the minutes of the last meeting and a motion was
made, seconded and passed unanimously to accept the minutes as mailed.

Report by Recreation Commissioner:
Mr. Dolansky stated that he hoped everyone had time to read the Administrative Report. He was
really glad the levy had passed and he expressed great relief that over five months of campaign
efforts finally paid off. Mr. Dolansky explained that almost eighty volunteers had helped to
promote the levy. Community organizations that helped out included North Olmsted Hot Stove
League, St. Richard’s Athletic Boosters, North Olmsted Hockey Club and the West Shore Figure
Skating Club, to mention just a few. For the phone-a-thon over fifty volunteers contacted
approximately 4,000 people in a five day period. Mr. Dolansky also noted that some residents
didn’t receive their levy flyers in a timely fashion due to a delay at the Post Office. He stated that
all the flyers were delivered to the Post Office nine days prior to the election day.

Mr. Gardner inquired about the hiring of a Springvale Maintenance worker at the Recreation
Center. Mr. Dolansky replied that during the winter Maintenance staff at Springvale is typically
let go except for two or three workers. During the winter months there simply is not enough
work available so we have been able to have some of these employees transfer to the Recreation
Center to perform special projects. Mr. Dolansky stated that prior to his managing Springvale
these available employment options were not being presented to all employees. He noted that
approximately seven employees have now worked at both facilities during the year depending on
the season.

Mrs. Hayes asked if we were anticipating any severe loss of participation or revenue if Westlake
opens an ice rink. Mr. Dolansky replied that he personally felt that the only area that might be
adversely effected is the skating lessons. There are limited numbers of participants in skating
lessons and many do come from Westlake. However, he explained that much of the ice rentals
sold to the North Olmsted Hockey Club are done so at a very reasonable rate due to their large
purchasing volume. If we were able to bring outside organizations in to rent any extra ice time
due to another ice rink being available we might actually be able to charge a premium rate for ice
rental time. Mr. Morgan stated that there is always a lack of adequate ice time to be rented and
we could always have more public skates which typically are very profitable.
