Commission Meeting
February 12, 1997
Page Three

Mrs. Saringer stated that recently a senior citizen told her that they really don’t use the Recreation
Center because there are not enough programs for seniors. The other concern this senior citizen
expressed is that the hours for programs conducive to their age were not at night. Mr. Dolansky
replied that during the evenings we don’t have a lot because of swimming lessons and
competitions. Mr. Morgan stated that there has been great attendance and participation by
seniors at the water exercise programs in the morning and afternoon hours. Mr. Morgan also
pointed out that the majority of tennis players during the morning and afternoon hours ranges in
the over forty age bracket. Mr. Dolansky and Mr. Morgan also noted that much of the facility is
designed and already utilized for competitive athletics and recreation which typically are
conducive to more physically active seniors and, of course, adults as well as children. However,
there are many programs which senior can participate in but Mr. Morgan stated that they tend not
to place labels on programs saying they are expressly for seniors because this narrows the scope
of potential participants. Mr. Dolansky stated that long term planning needs to consider the needs
of seniors since the population of America and North Olmsted is graying. He highly
recommended the creation of a fitness area with selectorized weight lifting machines and aerobic
equipment like treadmills and stationary bikes which are great devices for seniors to utilize to
maintain a healthy body. He also stated that very little competition exits in the North Olmsted
market for this type of operation. Mr. Dolansky noted that he would meet with Mr. Copeland
who supervises that Senior Center to see if new programs could be developed specifically to meet
the needs of seniors.

Mr. Dolansky reviewed the Month-To-Date and Year-To-Date Income Reports for January.
There was a $20,000 increase in the ice rink revenue over 1996. $4,000 to $5,000 of the increase
is due to the rate changes, and the remainder of the increase is a late payment from the North
Olmsted Hockey Club. The December 1996 Year-To-Date was revised by $88,000 to adjust the
income derived via the tax levies. This adjustment represents the 10% reimbursement that comes
from the State on the property tax which is not received until the very end of the year.

Mr. Dolansky stated that Holly Kish has been transferred from the Service Department to serve as
Secretary at Springvale. She is doing a fine job preparing some of the reports and providing
office organization. There was some discussion regarding a winter indoor golf instruction
program to condition golfers for the spring season. Mr. Morgan replied that he was a little
disappointed in the response to the program as advertised in the brochure. Mr. Dolansky replied
the Golf Pro that works at Springvale leaves the area during the winter months so he has
requested that Bill Prest, Golf Supervisor, try to secure an additional Golf Pro who could work
year round and help to develop an indoor program with their guidance.

Mr. Gardner inquired about the purchases at the Pro Shop at Springvale. Mr. Dolansky stated
that items are kept to a minimum at the Pro Shop because it is too difficult for one person to
handle the counter work for golf fees and concession service as well as service an extensive Pro
Shop area. Bill Prest, Golf Course Supervisor, is going to be focusing more on fitting higher end
