Recreation Commission Meeting
July 17, 2000
Page Three

th
the 4 of July celebration. Thank you, Duane Limpert, for coming to be judge and cooking hot
dogs and to Tom Jenkins for attending with your family. The Cleveland Lumberjacks came on
th
July 11 and set up some of the temporary dasher boards, with kids showing up to play a little
street hockey. We’re also preparing for Homecoming and the Fall-Winter Brochure.

Mr. Morgan reported to the Commission on the new staff members. Jason Frolo and Jackie
Ryan are new program supervisors, and Doug Nist is our new pool supervisor. All three are very
qualified people in place and will work well for the future of the Recreation Center. The
Recreation Center is currently advertising for a rink supervisor, to be in place by late August or
early September.

There was general discussion among the members about getting a Website link into the City site
for the Fall brochure to get the word out to the city on the programs available. The increase in
prices for the rink – bumped up 3-5% - will still come under the national average. The increase
will be justified with lighting and the sound system.

The commission members, prompted by the Chairman, discussed personnel. With the shortage
of lifeguards, the Recreation Center is fortunate to have the lifeguard requirement fulfilled.
However, without increasing the hourly rates, the Center could have been courting disaster.

Mr. Morgan then discussed various Recreation facility’s systems. The rink leaks were corrected
by the maintenance crew this summer. The pool renovation was discussed. In the upcoming
years the Recreation Department will request the administration’s support for funding over a
period of years for the Recreation Complex, as well as park courts and soccer fields, with a view
to removing the leaf dump from the city to provide a parking place for the soccer fields. NOSO
has requested a meeting with the City to discuss parking in the Bradley Road area.

Mr. Morgan then took the members for a tour through the rink area. The sand base and piping
were shown. The pros for a cement base in the rink were discussed, with the idea to obtain
administration support for this improvement. The cost for a cement rink would be $400,000,
$200,000 for the compressors. The Recreation Department would present to the Mayor a
request for new compressors, piping, and an engineering study for a cement base. Mr. Morgan
explained that repairs only would be conducive to leaks at the joiners where they are clamped
and installed. Tom Stein, the Maintenance Supervisor, is wary of this unknown quantity. The
rates to use the rink were discussed among the members, and it was agreed that North Olmsted
is not out of line with other communities, and should be a service to the community. The
potential of the rink area for summer program use rain or shine was highlighted. Mr. Jenkins
would like a goal and projection on this use as well as placement of a fitness center in the
Cablevision space – to “project” the projects and place them in years. The tour then continued to
the tennis area, where the high line curtains were shown, together with new painting and new
lighting benefits.

Mr. Morgan said that Mr. Dave Gardner is to be thanked for changing the slogan of the
Recreation and Parks Department from “The Community’s Place to Play” to “The Community’s
Place to Play and Learn.” The new slogan appeared on the T-shirts provided to Recreation
Program participants. Comments were also made by commission members about the beauty of
the landscaping around the Recreation Complex. Mr. Morgan replied that this was primarily a
result of the efforts of Tom Stein, Jr., and that he would pass the word for a job well done. He
also gave credit to his predecessor, Mike Dolansky, who encouraged the landscaping effort.

Recreation Commission Meeting
