Recreation Commission Meeting
July 17, 2000
Page Two

take a look at for the bench area. We think we’re really going to spruce the place up – as you
know, the ceiling was done last year – so this will not only create aesthetics, but will also
eliminate a trip hazard.

Mr. Morgan then stated that the new shelter at North Olmsted Park, funded by Community
Council’s donation of $35,000, will be located at the site of the old horseshoe pits, across from
Diamond #4. The cement base is being poured by Jack Boss Concrete. Tom Stein and our
maintenance men will be building the shelter. The donation of shingles and nails for roofing will
be handled by Community Council. The shelter should be complete by Homecoming.

th
Mr. Morgan reported on the July 4 celebration. Decorated bikes were up from 140 to 200 this
year. The moon walk, a big inflatable, was well received this year. The kids played on that for
over four hours. The weather held for a good crowd at the celebration. There were
th
approximately $4,000 in hard costs for the 4, including the food and $1,684 in employee wages.
General discussion ensued on the events of the holiday this year and next, including the
suggestion for an inflatable slide-like Titantic in 2001.

Mr. Morgan showed to the members T-shirts bought for the program supervisors and ticket booth
employees. The T-shirts have been very well received. Jackie Ryan created the design. The T-
shirts establish an image, like Springvale, showing our patrons who’s on duty or not. This will be
a two to three year process, resulting in five shirts for each employee.

Later in the meeting Mr. Morgan and the Commission members will tour the rink and tennis
areas to show improvements the Maintenance Department has made. Along with approved
improvements, the Recreation Department has commissioned an engineering study to renovate
North Olmsted Park, which includes tennis courts, basketball courts, new parking, lighting,
restrooms, and brand new lights. The engineering is currently funded, but nothing else. Mr.
Morgan exhibited illustrations of Diamond #1 and Diamond #2. The new lighting towers were
shown – the towers are going to be 60 ft. high. There was general discussion among the
members on lighting at the park, particularly how it will affect the neighbors on East Park and
West Park. Solutions to confine spillage towards neighboring properties were discussed.

Engineering is also taking a look at replacing the canopy roof in the front lobby areas, the new
sound system and event lighting.

Mr. Morgan noted there was a headline indicating the skate park came in over bid. There was
only one bidder – Fabrizzi Trucking and Paving – who was greater than 10% over the engineer’s
estimate. This project will be advertised and bids received again and, hopefully, all will be in
place by the Fall.

General discussion on the summer programming ensued. Central Playground and movie crowds
were great, especially for “Toy Story 2.” The new sound system has been very well received.
Movies for teens and adults are being discussed for the Fall, specifically, “Grease,” to target the
teen crowd. The learn-to-swim program initiated ribbon rewards, with names and a star, as new
marketing promoting the kids to come back for more sessions. There is recognition for all the
kids, whether they pass from one level to the next or not, as sometimes it takes more than one
session to do so. Special Recreation and Karate are doing well, as well as the Swim Team, T-
th
ball and Whiffleball. Regarding special events, The Fishing Derby on May 14was a success,
All Scouts Weekend sunny, and Fleer Diamond Skills well received. Again, the community
enjoyed
