Minutes of a Meeting of the
Parks and Recreation Commission
August 6, 2007

Gymnastics usually carry themselves. Team Sports usually breaks even, but it’s always the Ice Rink
that subsidizes the Pool and Enrichment; this year it’s just the opposite. Mr. Barker asked if it could
be because the Ice Rink was shut down that more people signed up with other programs, or the Rec
Department is more aware of what is going on. Mr. DiSalvo said that the Rec lost close to $9,000 for
the summer in the Ice Rink. However, the Rink had to be shut down for repairs. Mr. Barker said he
understood that; what he was saying is that Tennis, Pool, and Enrichment are making up the difference
that usually Ice makes up. Is it because there is some really good things going on, or is it because the
Ice Rink was shut down that people anticipated and signed up elsewhere. Mr. DiSalvo said that
people that would normally sign up with ice programs really do not cross over. Mr. Lasko noticed the
increase in the Pool swimming classes. Mr. DiSalvo said it was mainly because of the quality of the
programming, and there are a lot more people coming. The Supervisor is utilizing the pool to the
maximum. Instead of keeping the entire pool open for three seniors, she’s keeping two lanes open for
them and the rest of the pool is being used for classes and other revenue-generating programs.
Everyone is happy.

Mr. Barker asked with the year-to-date percentage of revenue, with the Rec Department showing
71.10 percent, does that mean that the Rec Department will go above what is being projected? Mr.
DiSalvo said that, after summer camp, the true Enrichment Programs will bring it up to 100 percent.
Now, a bulk of the revenue has been collected. The Pool still has a long way to go. Cindi (Bartko),
Aquatics Supervisor, will probably go over about $26,000 than what was originally projected. Jenny
(Couts) will hit budget but maybe go $2,000 or $3,000 above. The bulk of her income comes from
the summer camp. Betsy’s on track to make up a lot of revenue with the Rink, but that will be a
pretty big challenge to achieve. Mr. Barker said that, since we were shut down for three months, and
as we heard at the special meeting for the Rec Master Plan, it seems like it’s our responsibility to make
some decisions quickly on what to do, and I don’t agree with some of the comments made in the
audience. Some of those people cause certain rumors to come about, and Mr. Barker thought we
acted quickly and responsibly enough to quash those rumors, and when people are seen on the ice, that
is all good for us and good for the crew.

The next page shows an Income Statement Comparison of the prior year. These numbers do not
reflect the Endowment Account, so this is true income, while the next page indicates the Month to
Date Revenue Detail. The Endowment Accounts are monies are to help fund clubs or organizations
that use specific areas of the facility. It’s going to be close, but the Commissioner believes the Rec
Department will make budget. Mr. Barker commented that he thinks the figures are great, considering
the shut down of the rink and the fact that Mr. DiSalvo did not come to Administration for some
operating money. Mr. DiSalvo said that the good thing about the Rink is that if there are four big
rentals, the Rec Department will make it up.

This concluded the report of the Recreation Commissioner.
Page 3
