Minutes of a Meeting of the
Parks and Recreation Commission
August 6, 2007

REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY LIFE SERVICES DIRECTOR

Karrie Tipton Contract

Mr. Dailey reported to the Commission that currently the Contract for Karrie Skall Tipton was up for
renewal and asked if anything needed to be approved by the Rec Commission before it went to
Council. It was the understanding of Mr. Barker that everything had to be approved by the
Commission before it went to Council. Mr. Dailey said that Karrie’s contract began in about 1999.
She’s done a good job with the program; the kids respond well to her. Mr. DiSalvo said that it’s an
extra feature for the Rec Center, even though it’s not the Rec’s program. The Rec gets extra business
from the siblings of her students in the rink or the pool, so more or less it’s a win-win situation for the
Rec Center. Mr. Dailey said that he and Mr. DiSalvo went through her prior contract to see if there
were any changes that were needed to be made, and it was their consensus that the way it was set up
in the past was equitable for the City.

Mr. Dailey put it in the form of a Motion in front of the Parks and Recreation Commission to enter
into negotiations to renew the next contract with Karrie Skall Tipton. Mr. Lasko seconded. Upon roll
call of Messrs. Lasko, Dailey, Barker, and Groden, the Motion passed unanimously. Mr. Dailey said
this will be up before Council tomorrow as well.

Post Card Mailers

Mr. Dailey said that last week he had a meeting with all the Program Supervisors. He continued that
they are investigating going back to the book mailing and getting advertising to offset the cost. There
are some examples from Westlake and Strongsville with their booklets. We are looking at Coke and
our utility providers to look towards ads for people to know about us. Had our website been better, it
may have drawn more people in, but the City’s website is not that user-friendly at this point in time.
It’s much better than it used to be.

Mr. DiSalvo said the Rec Department would like to go back to a quarterly newsletter format, not a
huge brochure, depending upon the advertising.

Mr. Barker said that one of the comments made at the Special Rec Meeting was has there been any
thought given to doing any mailings to all former ice and hockey people stating that the Rec Center is
up and running again. Some of the comments made were that the Rec Department has lost some of its
people to other programs because no one was sure. Mr. DiSalvo said that the post cards went out to
figure skating ice people and that Ed Garrity has been working to get the hockey people back here.
He did know for a fact that a lot of them left. Winterhurst is so crowded now that they are renting ice
from North Olmsted. For the Rec Center, it’s a wash, but for the NOHC, it’s a loss. The time frame
for hockey is September through May. Sometimes there is a spring and summer league, but those are
definitely hot times for tryouts.
Page 4
