MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE
NORTH OLMSTED PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
June 4, 2007

Meeting called to order: 7:00 p.m.

In Attendance: Anna Kanis, Chairperson
John J. Lasko, Jr., Co-Chairperson

Ted DiSalvo, Commissioner

Norm Baxter, Member
Terry Groden, Member
Chris Scarl, Member

Visitors: Ed Garrity, NOHC
Marie Peepers, Emerald Necklace Girls’ Team

Ms. Kanis opened the meeting and roll call was taken.

VISITOR’S OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS COMMISSION

NOHC

Mr. Garrity reported that he has been working with the Commissioner and Tom Stein (Maintenance),
realizing that the rink is in need of different things. A copy of his letter to Mr. DiSalvo is attached
hereto. The North Olmsted Hockey Club is trying to reach out its hand, being aware of the City’s
financial condition and knowing that the maintenance during the summer is much harder, especially
with the strain with the rink, baseball fields and other normal maintenance. The NOHC would like to
offer assistance. They would like to paint the bleachers, keeping the top white and then add orange
and black in the front – North Olmsted’s colors. The benches are in need of repair and carpeting and
black mag on the floor to protect the skates. The NOHC anticipates that they will be in full gear on
August 1, 2007, and has signed up to have open skate for its hockey club that first weekend. The
NOHC is being very proactive, regardless of what the Master Plan delivers – the NOHC wants to stay
and see what happens.

Ms. Kanis asked how the numbers were. Mr. Garrity replied that they are down because now there is
another AAA team that’s formed, and it will be hard to tell. There are a lot of “Mites” – our early
skaters – 48 of them in the program last year – “Mighty Mites” and “Mites.” The “Mighty Mites” are
the three, four and five-year-olds. The NOHC put them on the ice last year, giving them helmets and
shin pads for free. They skated about eight weeks for free in the Studio Rink just to bring them in.
From that, there were two Mite C teams that played spring hockey – 30 kids.

Mr. Garrity said that the idea of “travel” is out of control. The Rec Programs take such abuse because
everyone thinks their kids are going to be superstars and want to travel and then go to the NHL and
