Recreation Commission Minutes
February 2, 2004

be watered regularly. If water is the magic ingredient, and money is no object, how to get it
there? The initial plan was an in-ground sprinkler; very nice. The reality is that the in-ground
sprinkler heads could become a safety hazard for kids playing. Also, how to get the system
flushed out every year would become a problem. Plan B then came into being: above ground
sprinklers. Kay Catlett called, who had an inquiry from Brad Friedel about hosting a soccer camp
in this area, specifically North Olmsted. The proposal is three part: one is the installation of a
water line along the same path of the access road, and then "T"; from there, purchase of the actual
sprinkler system; and then the third part (where Brad comes in) hosting his soccer camp on the
back four fields. What Brad proposes is that he bring in the groundskeeper from the club he plays
for in England. He will also bring in someone from the Agricultural Department at Ohio State.
They will spend about a week reconditioning the fields at his expense. Last year Brad had the
camp at Oberlin College. There were two things he did not like about the College. One was that
he did not like the dormitory setup. The second part was that he was not fully satisfied with the
condition of the playing fields. He made the same offer to the college to recondition the fields,
but the college declined. Brad has already contracted with the Radisson to host the camp. He is
willing to come to North Olmsted, bring in his groundskeeper, bring up someone from Ohio State
and, working with Ron, bring up the fields to the point where they will be ready to go for the
camp.

As regards the sprinkler system, the cost would be about $8,000. NOSO will take care of
purchasing the system. The next question is the cost of watering. The bottom line is that it will
cost a little bit under $400 a week. If the weather is wet, it will be a little bit less; dry, a little bit
more. NOSO believes that the middle two thirds of the fields will be watered the most. Six fields
will be used the most. The full field will not be created out of the seventh because there's a
baseball diamond on the far end. That cost will be NOSO's responsibility.

The optimal way for securing the sprinkler when not in use would be a fenced in area next to the
shed back by field four, but NOSO is open to suggestions. NOSO would hope that the City
would take responsibility for securing that water line and preparing for the winter months.

Regarding the condition of the fields, Brad is willing to bring in, at his expense, the
groundskeepers that need to come in as well as the equipment that needs to be brought in as well
as any materials and watering. There will be two camps: one is an open goalie camp and one will
be by invitation only, 150 players invited. NOSO met with Brad a few weeks ago. A former CIA
individual will run security at the camps and will stay with the kids at the hotel. Brad is running a
first rate camp.

Last, but not least, NOSO asks that there be improved signage, paving the drive back to the back
fields, work on the shed, increase the parking. Also, there are permanently mounted goals that
should be replaced with movable ones. Also, NOSO will line the fields, which includes
purchasing the paint, set up the goals, put up the nets, put of the flags, etc. Also, NOSO will have
a contract to have the grounds fertilized several times a year.
Page 2
