Recreation Commission Meeting
January 5, 2004

and the Commissioner visited Strongsville. They have more ice than North Olmsted, but Mr.
DiSalvo does not see why they are getting the business they do. Ms. Drenski said that Greenbriar
closed and that they took the club to Strongsville. Ms. Drenski said the problem is that there are
so many rinks in the surrounding communities. It hurts North Olmsted that it does not have the
times to offer that Strongsville does. Also, the Strongsville schools take advantage of the down
times Strongsville has for a good price, yet Strongsville is built with private funds. The
Commissioner said that he's looking at offering a better non-prime time fee to make it more
attractive for the patrons.

Vending

The Law Department is drawing up the contract for the new vending company today. This will
be a fresh perspective and will bring a lot of business to the Rec Center. The present/past vendor
had three opportunities to change the machines and offered $3,000 to the Rec to keep his
contract. It does not matter; no changes have been made to date. The new vendors will begin
business immediately.

This concluded the Report of the Recreation Commissioner.

REPORT BY SAFETY DIRECTOR

N/A.

NEW BUSINESS

NOSO Letter

Mr. DiSalvo asked Ms. Kanis about the letter, attached hereto as Exhibit A. The letter is from
Tom Hatfield to Ted DiSalvo dated December 26, 2003 and is regarding the Soccer Facilities. He
brought the letter to Ms. Kanis to see what she thought of it. She said it had nothing to do with
the other soccer venture. Ms. Kanis said that Mr. Hatfield had been with NOSO for 27 years.
Mr. DiSalvo would like to talk with Mr. Hatfield but, on the fourth option, he does not know if
the Rec Department can do anything for him. Mr. Gareau stated that this is not a Rec
Commission issue. It is a North Olmsted City School issue. Ms. Kanis agreed. All of the issues
deal with school board properties, other than item four, and Mr. Gareau did not know what Mr.
Hatfield meant by that item. Mr. Gareau remembered that there was an attempt to acquire land on
Bradley Road but there was never a timetable. One of the current landowners just asked if the
City would buy his property and the City said no. The little parcel that sits in the middle carries a
$200,000 price tag. There is still an issue about acquiring land in the area for recreational use.
The problem with Root Road is that is the old dump and there are many regulations about digging
at a former dump. If there is grant money available, as indicated in Mr. Hatfield's Item four, Mr.
Gareau continued, he would like to know about it. Mr. Kelley recommended that no
Page 6
