Minutes of a Meeting of
The North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
August 1, 2005

REPORT OF THE RECREATION COMMISSIONER

th
4 of July Bike Contest and Parade

th
Mr. DiSalvo began his report by saying the 4 of July Bike Contest and Parade went extremely
well. There were many participants this year. Ms. Jones asked about how many. The
Commissioner replied that 560 hot dogs were consumed; last year 320 were purchased, and there
were about 60 left. Ms. Jones asked if there were enough on hand. Mr. DiSalvo said that there
were plenty of soft drinks but not enough hot dogs. He thought that people went through the line
more than once for the wieners; there were enough hot dogs – not enough buns. Ms. Jones asked
if the candy was all right. The Commissioner replied that everything went very smoothly.

Mr. Baxter asked: we (the Commission) talked about whether people were going to be political
in the Parade; what happened to that scenario? The Commissioner said that it was strictly just
bike contestants and recreation activities. Mr. Limpert said that the Rec Commission is very
helpful because they are a recommending Board; however, the final decision is with the
Administration regarding any city department policies.

Outdoor Pool Status

The Commissioner reported that, on July 5, 2005, the staff noticed that the pool was suddenly
turning green. All indications were that it was in the filter system. The problem was t hat the
fresh water was not actually getting out to the pool. The reason was that the actual pipes that
carry this water collapsed, and suddenly gravel and sediment were in the pool. First, the main “T”
connection was pulled up. It was noticed that there was a ruptured pipe. The crew continued to
work out and cut a huge pad out, lifted that out and found that all of the return pipes were
literally ruptured or crushed. We don’t know why it happened. It was coincidental to the
previous work they did on the decking and gutters. That has since been fixed. It’s operating
perfectly. The water is nice, clear and blue (The Rec Department will put that down as a 30-year
repair. It was all original piping. With the cooperation and help from Service and Waste Water
that project was fixed within a week.)

Indoor Pool Repair Status

Mr. DiSalvo reported that there is current legislation being accomplished for Phase 3. Mr.
Limpert said that, hopefully, Council will pass it on suspension tomorrow night (August 2, 2005).
Ms. Jones wanted to know what Phase 3 was. Mr. Limpert said that Phase 3 (and he had a report
and some pictures of the situation) is $10,000.00 getting a repair, not a replacement. To do a
replacement the entire roof of the pool would be pulled off and then reconstruct. The cost would
be astronomical (hundreds of thousands). Mr. DiSalvo said it’s not exactly the roof; it’s
Page 16
