Minutes of a Meeting of
The North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
August 1, 2005

actually a beam. Ms. Jones asked why it was being done. Mr. Limpert said that it had to be
designed, and to get it designed close to $10,000 must be spent; to get $10,000 legislation is
needed from Council. There has been a request made to suspend the requirement for three
readings of Council. Mr. Limpert reported that it’s looking favorable. Ms. Jones asked when it
passes, when will it be accomplished? Mr. DiSalvo said he wanted to get it repaired the week of
ndth
September 5, 2005. The pool will shut down August 22 through September 11, so that’s the
window for repair. Designing the repair will be Leinweber Engineering, Ltd., Structural
Consultants.

Central Playground Program

The Commission said that the Central Program enrolled 165 participants, with close to 20 non-
residents (a large number). Non-residents are almost double the price of the resident fee. That
was for the six-week program. For the extended two-week program, the Rec Department
enrolled 70, better than half of the six-week enrollment. Last year the extended program was not
run. This program is growing by leaps and bounds. What’s good is that, not only is it a great
value for North Olmsted residents, it’s even a great value for non-residents; but the more non-
residents, the more money comes into the Rec Department. Ms. Jones asked how much it costs.
Mr. DiSalvo replied that it is $165 per resident and $240 per non-resident for the six-week
program, $80 for the extended program. Mr. Baxter asked if it was held at the North Olmsted
Park. Mr. Wetmore said it is every other day. The older group is at the Park with the younger
group at the Rec Center and vice versa the next day. Mr. Baxter asked what they do at the Rec
Department vs. the Park. Ms. Drenski said, “Swim.” Mr. DiSalvo said when the kids are at the
Park it’s mainly physical activities and the lunch break with some crafts. Mr. Baxter asked if the
kids used the building (concession area) for eating. Mr. DiSalvo said that during the program,
Concession is doing to-go lunches at the Park as well as at the Rec Department, so it’s picking up
the slack on concession sales. The kids use the areas very well. Ms. Drenski noted that the
studio rink is covered for art rink programs, and the kids also run around after lunch for kickball.
Mr. Baxter asked the age limit. Mr. DiSalvo responded: five to twelve. The Commissioner said
that one of the good things about the program is that the coordinator is a teacher. All her
counselors are in education and/or related majors, so those people are getting great experience
while they are getting paid. They are very interested in what they are doing.

Movies and Concerts in the Park

The season has concluded for movies and concerts in the Park. The enrollment and/or
participation for the concerts are dwindling. The Commissioner wanted this on record. It’s very
expensive to have bands come in: between $300 and $350 each, with six concerts a year.
Average attendance is about five. This must be looked at closely. Mr. DiSalvo does not want to
take this away, but instead of two or three per month, there may be one per month (June, July and
Page 17
