There is enough property in the back to build <br />another building. One big area would be for a locker room area; one area would be for the gym <br />plus tennis. There could still be a private door for the tennis facility. With the new building, there <br />could be four, five or six courts, whatever is feasible. The sixteen-foot wide area (hallway area) <br />could be upstairs as bleachers for a viewing area for tennis. There could be basketball or <br />volleyball courts. The drawing is a “second floor” look as one looks down through the existing <br />tennis building. There could be a track, either upstairs or down on the tennis courts that are there <br />now. The 3,600 square foot area could accommodate gymnastics. The heating could all be the <br />same that’s there. The lighting could be the same or raise and lower it. The idea would be to <br />utilize the same building the Rec Center has, which probably would bring in more than tennis is at <br />the present time, but tennis cannot be eliminated (that would be built out back). The thing that <br />would be nice with the hockey locker rooms in place is that hockey would come off the rinks <br />from the doors, with a public skate session coming in which, right now, is a traffic jam because <br />hockey is trying to leave and public’s coming in. There are many options to be considered. This <br />would free up the entire gym upstairs to do other programs. It makes for a nice renovation and <br />utilizes the existing building. Only one building would be built, and that would be for tennis. <br />Currently, tennis is under ground (where the floor is). Any water seeping through is disastrous <br />for tennis. <br /> <br />Mr. DiSalvo said that the idea behind Mr. Stein’s plan would be to improve current Rec Center <br />facilities. This would address the specific needs of what needs to be improved at the Rec <br />Complex. There are many phone calls being received regarding hockey locker rooms and tennis. <br />If nothing is done within five years, the Rec faces considerable challenges, because it won’t be <br />able to compete with other facilities. <br /> <br />Mr. Stein said that the whole purpose of the plan is to keep people coming through the same <br />ticket booth area, coming down the back hallway, and tennis people would actually walk down <br />the hallway into the new facility. The same controls would be in place. There could be a separate <br />parking lot in the back for Pat Cunningham and the tennis pros where they would have a pass or <br />keyed door for them. Questions? <br /> <br />Mr. Kelley asked if there would be any upgrades to the existing hockey rink at that time, since he <br />knew that last year there were questions regarding the sub-base of the rink. Mr. Stein replied that <br />it could be added in, but that the Rec would be pressed to come up with the money. <br /> <br />Mr. Stein was asked the cost of the current proposal: he replied it would be between $2 to $4 <br />million dollars (that was five to eight years ago). The cost of renovating the rink would be about <br />$600,000. New steel doors are being put in at the present time. Mr. Stein phoned the company <br />that manufactures the doors, and they wanted $3,000 for one of the gates. The Rec’s <br />maintenance crew built one for under $500.
