Minutes of a Meeting of
The North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
June 6, 2005

$44,822. Also, there was an average attendance of 258 and last year it was 229. The Skates
lasted all the way through May; there were 334 the last week. There were a lot of kids. This
total was high even with three less skates than last year because of the holidays.

The Commissioners were asked why they thought there was an increase in attendance. Mr.
DiSalvo replied that it’s safer in the building now; the security is better. Also, there was only one
incident this year. Also, the Commissioners worked all of the skates this year. Parents were
seeing the difference. Ms. Jones said that there is a whole new set up compared to when Mr.
DiSalvo first became Recreation Commissioner. Before the kids were not allowed to come in
early; they had to stay out in the lobby. The ice schedule was changed so that the hockey people
could get out and the kids could come in. It’s been flowing better every year.

th
4 of July Bike Contest and Parade

th
Mr. DiSalvo said that he wanted to touch base with the Commission on the 4 of July Bike
thth
Contest and Parade. This year it will be on July 4, a Monday. Last year the 4 fell on Sunday,
and some people were at the parade two days – Sunday and Monday. It was confusing.

Ms. Jones said that North Olmsted Community Council gave Ms. Drenski the $200 check for the
candy.

Mr. DiSalvo said that there will be a $100 gift certificate from the North Olmsted VFW; $100
each for boy and girl picked out of the drawing. The categories are wagon train for parade only,
six and under, seven to nine bicycle division and the twelve and in-line guests are invited to in-line
skaters. Typically, the format will be the contest, the parade, followed by the flag raising
ceremony, Star Spangled Banner, the welcome from the Recreation Commissioner and the
welcome from the Mayor. Ms. Drenski said that Chris Wetmore is trying to do a kickball
tournament this year for a family tournament. There will be two divisions: one with families with
children ages six to ten and one with families with children ages eleven to seventeen. The first
game will be on Sunday, and the final game will be Monday after the parade.

Ms. Jones asked how many people show up for the parade. Mr. DiSalvo said between 250 and
300, based on how many hot dogs and cokes go. One minor change is that Coke will be
providing bottles this year: Coke, Diet Coke and also bottled water.

Mr. DiSalvo said that there is no current format for judging – at present Central Playground staff
will do the judging – but anyone from the Rec Commission is welcome to do so or to help out
with hot dogs.
Page 4
