Minutes of a Meeting of the North Olmsted Parks & Recreation Commission
October 3, 2005

by training – the Rec will try to have that in place by basketball season in December. No one
wants to sit through an eight-hour training, but the Rec will try to get parts of the training in
slowly. Mr. Kelley said that he coaches CYO basketball and must go through an eight-hour
course and have background checks, complete with fingerprinting. Ms. Drenski said that the
problem is, for example, that in softball, the Rec Center begs people to coach, but the Rec will
take baby steps in trying to get the present coaches to do a better job. Mr. DiSalvo said that any
paid contract employee is required to get a background check and fingerprints, but since this is
voluntary and not paid… the Commissioner deferred to Mr. Limpert, who said that he did not
think it’s in place but he is not saying that the Rec Center can’t look into doing that. As he
understood it, it’s something that’s being done in a better way than what was done before on the
various paid contract people. Quite frankly, getting volunteer coaches is a problem.

This concluded the Report of the Recreation Commissioner.
REPORT OF THE SAFETY DIRECTOR

Pool Beam

Mr. Limpert reported that there is a contract with Comsteel to repair the pool. There is a
preliminary timetable of next Monday, October 10, 2005, which will work perfectly with the
window the Rec Center left open to shut the pool down for the time to get it repaired. There
were three companies recommended by the engineering firm. Of those three, the Safety Director
was able to contact two. Mr. Kelley was kind enough to give Mr. Limpert a company named
Affiliated, who worked with a structural steel erecting company. The quote went in through
them. One of the companies given did not get to the point of a formal quote, but they were going
to be in the mid-30’s. Affiliated’s partner came in around $28-$29K. Comsteel came in at
$22,400. Besides this being the lowest price, the Safety Director felt that since the engineering
firm was familiar with them and comfortable with their doing the work, it was a good a
compelling reason to go with them. The Safety Director thanked Mr. Kelley for putting him in
the direction of Affiliated. The project should be done by November.

Parking Lot

The maintenance crew is going through the process of backfilling behind the curbs.

Fence at Ball Diamond

As far as the baseball diamond home run fence, that is in the court of the schools. We are waiting
to hear from them as far as the Motion passed by the Rec Commission. The more we have looked
at it, the other fencing issues did not have to go to Council, so it did seem unfair to bring it to
Council. The Rec Center is waiting to see what the schools are bringing forward as far
Page 6
