Recreation Commission Meeting
June 5, 2006
Page Four

discussion between the Rec Department and a Rotary Club representative needs to be scheduled to
determine the final outcome of this lingering issue.

Ms. Jones said that at least the Pavilion is gone, because it really was an eyesore. Mr. Kelley said that
the safety issue is gone because the Pavilion is down, and there are no funds. Mr. Baxter hesitated to
say that the Rec Commission would make a recommendation to actually have a Pavilion, but it would
seem to him that, regardless of whether you call it the Rotary Pavilion or the Kiwanis Pavilion or
whatever, but that is North Olmsted’s major park: why not have a quality park and spend the money
(he knew it was not in the budget) but plan on it. Why wait for how long? Build it sooner rather than
later. Let’s be proactive and figure out how we’re going to make the park a nicer place. Ms. Drenski
said she would agree; that if there are any other organizations within the City that would be willing to
help out (like the Kiwanis as Mr. Baxter said) it would be great. However, it is not in the budget, and
there are all sorts of things for capital improvements. Mr. Baxter said he knows there is a deferment
for the Rec Center Master Plan and what will transpire with that, but his only comment would be that
he did not see how having another picnic pavilion at the park would be part of a Master Plan that
would somehow be affected so I would suggest that the Rec Department try to put it in so that the
park is a nicer place and that people use it. He said before, and he believes that the Commission
agrees, that the park should be more than ball fields. A Pavilion would make the park more inviting
for people to use the park for other purposes and not wait until an organization has some money to
effectuate it so if we beg, borrow or steal from Home Depot or Lowe’s so we can build it, then do it.
Mr. Kelley said that, along those lines, he received a letter from the City stating that they are having a
meeting about the Master Plan with the City Planner on August 15, 2006 and that he was invited to
attend as Chair of this Commission. Mr. Baxter asked if there were not members of the Commission
already in place to represent us. Ms. Jones never made it (to a meeting regarding the matter). Ms.
Kanis said she went one time. Mr. Kelley said that he would take Mr. Baxter’s comments directly to
that meeting. Mr. Baxter said that, unless the Commission doesn’t agree….Mr. Kelley said it would
be an input type of meeting, but that he agreed with Mr. Baxter wholeheartedly. The Pavilion used to
be a rental facility, and, unfortunately, it’s gone now. Somewhere down the line something should be
done.

Income Reports

Ms. Drenski gave out the income reports for the Commission’s perusal and asked if the corrected
statements from last month were received with the May Minutes. The Commission did.

Mr. Barker asked if the year-to-date revenue detail was March, April or May. Mr. Lasko said it said
March in one place but he believed it was May. Ms. Drenski said it was month-to-date through May.
The Pool is down. There were some changes in the learn-to-swim program, and she believed it had a
major effect on the pool income. There was an entire session that was not run in hopes to get back on
a different type of schedule; Ms. Skuza took out the little mini course that was there that would have

Page 4
