Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
December 1, 2008

set up perfectly; she tweaked it just a little, and then from the beginning our spring lessons she
increased it from six to eight weeks – so we’re going to go back to the ’07 formula in ’09. Mr.
Mahoney said it should be noted that it’s only $4,000 off. John Dailey said there were some concerns
with regard to staffing; the way she was using the staff lifeguarding at the pool as well. When Chris
got in there…we believed that she may have overstaffed for some things where she didn’t need it. Mr.
Scarl said that if you look at September and October in the Pool, September had a $1,700 difference,
but the past October was $3,700 difference. Are there lessons in October, because that’s a big jump
up from September. Ms. Drenski said we may some more of that; her registrations are not the same
this year as last year. There is a different person there now; Cindi is not here any more, so we’re
trying to get it all the same. Mr. Groden asked if there were fewer swim teams here than last year.
Mr. DiSalvo said that just Fairview is not here this year. Ms. Drenski said that the schedule is still full.
They just started in November; so, hopefully, November and December will look better.

Mr. DiSalvo said that the person who provides scuba instruction still owes the Rec Department about
$2,500. The Commissioner received a message that he’d like to come back and didn’t make any
mention of his invoice. It was clear that scuba would not be back until the invoice is paid in full; John
(Dailey) has sent him two or three letters re same.

Mr. Scarl asked about the Pro Shop billing – where does that stand? Mr. Dailey said that they are
paying it currently. They were set up with a payment plan through the Rocky River court, and they
are trying to sell their skate sharpener. They are up to date and will probably be paid off by next June.
They are authorized to try to sell their sharpener, but they haven’t been in.

Tom Stein’s Retirement

Tom Stein will be retiring from his position effective January 1, 2009.

This concluded the report of the Recreation Commissioner.

Mr. Groden asked if there were any more questions for Mr. DiSalvo.

Mr. Dailey followed up a little regarding Tom Stein’s retirement. In addition, Tom Stein’s position is
being eliminated from the payroll at the Recreation Center. The cost of that position runs the City
about $82,000 a year with salary and benefits. The City of North Olmsted cannot afford to maintain
this for the next few years in its payroll structure, so it’s been eliminated. He’ll be receiving a payout
in his first check in January, so next year’s savings should be about $35,000 to $40,000 with the
elimination of that position. Then, over the next five years, there should be about $400,000 in savings
in the Rec Center budget. He will be missed, no doubt about it. He knows a lot of the day-to-day
operations at the Rec Center. We will count on our lead maintenance men to help us out with some
direction, who will be reporting directly to Ted. Within the last two years, there will have been
Page 3
