Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
December 1, 2008

the elimination of two full-time positions here at the Rec Center: The Aquatics Supervisor and the
Maintenance Supervisor.

Rec Center Painted

Also, if you notice, the rooms have been painted here. The goal is to get the Rec Center painted by
the end of the year; the main hallways, the lobby area. Ted is going to be setting something up with
Sherwin Williams to come and give us recommendations. If you see Linda Powell, bring that to her
attention, because she brought this to our attention a few years ago.

REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY LIFE SERVICES DIRECTOR

Grant Appropriations for 2009

You may have seen in the paper that we applied for the Nature Works Grant for $56,000 through the
Ohio Department of Natural Resources this year. We got a little bit under half - $25,400. North
Olmsted and Lakewood were the only two cities in Cuyahoga County that received the Grant, so we’ll
be using that money, together with money from the Knights of Columbus plus whatever money we
appropriate for 2009 for capital to replace the playground at Barton/Bradley Park. It won’t be as big
as what we had at North Olmsted Park, but the Park won’t be used as much as North Olmsted Park.
Again, there will be a nice playground for the kids out there, ADA accessible, rubberized surface. Any
time we get free money, we’ll take it. We’ll be applying again for the Nature Works Grant for the
next year. Commissioner DiSalvo and I have been thinking of some ideas – bleachers for the outside
fields for a start. Again, anything else we do will be ADA compliant.

This concluded the report of the Community Life Services Director.

Mr. Groden asked if there were any questions.

Mr. Mahoney asked the total amount received. Mr. Dailey said it was $25,400. Not that this is an
accusatory tone, but that money will be used to replace the playground equipment at Barton/Bradley?
Mr. Dailey replied that it was what was applied for; therefore, it must be used for that purpose. The
equipment was old and worn; there were no replacement parts available. The slide had a nice crack
going down the middle of it. The metal meshing that used to be rubber coated at one time was falling
apart, so the City and Rec Department made the decision to remove it.

Jerod’s Law

Ms. Nader asked if anyone analyzed the situation for Jerod’s Law issues with regard to the new
playground equipment. Mr. Dailey said he was unaware of this law. Ms. Nader said it’s a new law in
effect since about the first of the year having to do with a child that was killed in some playground
situation. Now there’s a law whereby every piece of equipment must be analyzed and every design
Page 4
