Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
December 1, 2008

for safety to make sure they are safe, e.g., equipment tied to walls structurally, bleachers are safe. She
did not have the back-up for this law. Mr. Dailey said that the Rec Department would look into it.

Loss of Two Positions

Mr. Groden asked, because of the elimination of the two positions, where will that money go? Will
that money stay in the Rec Fund? Mr. Dailey said that less will be appropriated. Mr. DiSalvo said it’s
a savings; not like there will be additional monies coming in.

OLD BUSINESS

Water Bills

Mr. Groden asked about the discussion at the last meeting of the water bills – why were they so high?
Has there been any progress on that? Mr. Dailey said that the Finance Department checked, and they
were accurate bills, with increased rates.

Speed Bumps

Mr. Groden said that it would be a good idea, as Mr. Baxter indicated in a previous meeting, to slow
down the traffic in the drive in the Park (the cut through), whether it’s speed bumps or more signs.
He though speed bumps would be most effective. Mr. Scarl said it’s inexpensive – the City has
asphalt.

Special Olympics

Ms. Drenski said that she mentioned it once before: the Special Olympics Program out of Winterhurst
th
will be moving its yearly competition on December 14, Sunday. There will be over 100 Special
Olympic athletes competing. We are also starting to talk with this program to see if this could be
brought over for next season. The opening ceremony starts at 9:00 a.m., with a parade of athletes,
through 5:00 p.m. Mr. Mahoney asked if there was a brochure or flyer; do they have one they want
the City to put out or advertise? Mr. Drenski said they don’t; they are coming, and they’ve been doing
it forever, and the people who want to know about it, know about it. Everyone is welcome; they
probably don’t have a big advertising budget to use, so it’s spread by word of mouth. Mr. Mahoney
said it would be good advertising for the City. If the police and fire would support it, it could become
very effective. Ms. Drenski said that food will be brought in for the kids; they bring their own judges.
Mr. Dailey asked if there was any type of admission for this event. Ms. Drenski said no, other than the
rental fee, coupled with donations.
Page 5
