Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
December 1, 2008

Hockey Club

Mr. Garrity said that the Hockey Club is open to work with the Rec Department with anything that
needs to be done with the Rink that could be done with its finances or do cut rate. We all know that
locker rooms are a big problem here. We split ice – we have two teams on the ice in an hour, and then
two more teams come on afterwards, so we take up all the locker rooms. If anyone is scheduled in the
Studio, there is no locker room available. It creates a problem where some of the kids are dressing in
an open area. It’s just not a really good idea. We’ve talked a few times about a couple of brick walls
in a couple strategic places, and all of a sudden we’ll have two large locker rooms. The Club is open
to working something out with the funds it has. There was a fundraiser this year at Nautica, and it
paid for the fees of the people working it; a portion went to the Club. When the Southwest
Conference has a tournament, our whole Club’s going through a tournament, and the Club’s paying
for it. The teams are benefitting from that. That was $4,000 that the Club received. Perhaps next
year it could be used for putting up a couple of brick walls. We know the budgets are tight and that
there’s a Union issue, but we think we can overcome a couple things and work it out and come to a
meeting of the minds. If anyone is ever here for a high school hockey game, both teams are on the
same ice; because of the rivalries, mouths run, no matter the coaches. Ms. Drenski said there have
been complaints about the dressing issues with girls that come in the rink and boys that come in the
rink so we had to make a general two-place locker room. Mr. Garrity said that some of the people
don’t know is that what is worn in hockey underneath is called under armor. The kids have their
under armor on when they are getting dressed. People walk around in it; some Moms are not happy
about it; but it just becomes routine. Ms. Drenski said that it would be good to provide some sort of
locker room space even when the general public are coming in and the hockey people are leaving. Mr.
Garrity said it would be beneficial to the Rec; it would be beneficial to the school, and it would be
beneficial to the Club. If we can get all three parties on track, it would be nice working together. Mr.
Garrity said it would be nice to have the Eagle stencil back on the ice and the orange and black paint in
the ice rink area, showcasing it as North Olmsted.

NEW BUSINESS

Hot Stove

Mr. Scarl said that he is bringing a letter from Hot Stove written by its President, Bob Finch, and Ron
Tallon, Jr., the League Chairman. Mr. Scarl did not know whether to give it to the Commissioner,
Mr. Dailey or the Mayor. Mr. Mahoney said it needed to go to Rec Committee first. Mr. Scarl said
the fees were being waived for Hot Stove in the past because of the monies spent by Hot Stove in
improving the fields. It’s basically the same thing the organization has been doing in the past: with its
Board of Directors, the organization will again spend money this year. To let the Commission know,
Mr. Scarl gave a recap of the letter: for ’08, Hot Stove spent $14,915 on the City fields, which was
probably its biggest year since it’s been doing this. The last two years, it was $24,300. Hot
Page 6
