Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
November 9, 2009

REPORT OF THE RECREATION COMMISSIONER AS REPORTED BY THE ASSISTANT
COMMISSIONER

Financial Report
Revenue and Expense Reports for 2009

Ms. Drenski reported on the Revenue and Expense Reports for October. Gymnastics has exceeded
the 2009 revenue budget at the end of October. We are down from 2008 at the end of October, but
already, just in the Rink alone there has been collected quite a bit in November. Once the fall season
starts up, some of those bills are now coming in. In looking at the overall picture, Ms. Drenski said
that she and Mr. DiSalvo are still trying to figure out why they are doing so well. Also, in the learn-
to-skate sessions there are closed classes for the first time this season; “closed” classes meaning filled.

Ms. Drenski asked if there were any revenue questions. Ms. Drenski was asked, since last month
there was concern about the ice rink...Ms. Drenski said that, just in the first eight days of November,
she brought in some of the October billing, and we do charge everyone in December for their
December billing. That will also come in. The public skates are still struggling; the Friday Nite Skates
are not showing the numbers we saw three or four years ago. That group of kids stayed with us for
about five seasons, and once they dropped off we didn’t get a new crew of kids in. We doubled this
past Friday from the previous Friday, so it’s been better once football ended, but is not quite what we
want; we’re going to watch November to see what happens. We have a new DJ, but all of the public
sessions are a little down; we’re going to take a hit somewhere; rentals are doing o.k. and learn-to-
skate is up significantly from Session I; the Session II has been much better, so that helped. Mr.
Mahoney asked if the ice rink rental had anything to do with the winter Olympics? Ms. Drenski said
that yes, usually learn-to-skate helps; usually the figure skating has higher numbers whenever there’s
an Olympic year, so that’s a little bit of a push in learn to skate – not so much in rentals but the classes
do help. Hopefully, it will also happen in the open skate. Three years ago, the Greater Cleveland
Skating Council put money up for national skating week, day or month; we do a free session from
1:00 to 3:00. It’s free, and we brainstorm trying to get anyone in here: coupons, free lessons,
anything we can do. In the last few years, the numbers weren’t as good. Three years ago they did a
Val-Pak coupon, and they paid for it – we had over 500 people. They are doing that again this year.
Some of the other years, we were forced to pick a date; that was in the middle of our sessions. This
one’s going to be January 2, 2010. With that Val-Pak, it was amazing at how many people that
reached. What they did was just say, “Come to your local rink for free skating,” and they put each
rink in the greater Cleveland area and the date and time you can come to it. That was a big help for
us; and it’s set up for this year as well. Ms. Drenski said she’ll have the Monsters’ Mascot come as
well; there will be a little single skating exhibition; we do a little hockey exhibition; a synchronized
exhibition just to show that there’s all kinds of ways to skate.
Page 2
