Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
November 9, 2009

Endowment Revenue

Mr. Baxter asked about Endowment Revenue. Ms. Drenski said that each Department has one or
another for different reasons. For skating, when you sign up for Learn-to-Skate I have to pay a $10
fee to U.S. Figure Skating, so when the person pays that, we put it right into the Endowment Fund
and goes right back out. Otherwise, our Revenue and Expense are totally separate, except for those
things that we have to pay to Red Cross when we have to pay lifeguarding fees; some of the football
equipment fees are done that way; some are swim team when we buy a T-shirt right back out of the
money that they pay. Mr. Baxter said, so, the items that are labeled “endowment” are an expense and
an equal amount paid, which we don’t have here but which would…right, Ms. Drenski said: when we
budget it, we have to budget how much we’re bringing in and how much is coming out, and it’s
supposed to be equal. Ice Show Endowment money is not: that money goes in there and stays in
there. We don’t expend it. We use it to pay for the costumes, etc., but anything extra we’ve used it
for repair or something we need in the Rink, but there is still a balance in there. That one did not get
totally zeroed out, but any excess money is still in there for use in the Rink; it’s not going to go away
at the end of the year; it’s going to be used for anything needed in the Rink area. Endowments are
earmarked for specifics in different areas.

Game Machines

Mr. Baxter said that, at some time in the past, we talked about the Game Machines and how they
weren’t doing well. Are they working well; we haven’t talked about that subject for a while. Mr.
Dailey said that there was an ad in the paper a week from Wednesday soliciting requests for proposals
for a new contract. Sometimes people complain about the games; they expect turnover very quickly in
that area. Ms. Drenski said that since that big changeover, his service is good; we’ve asked him to fix
something, he’ll come fix it; has he brought in a new game every week: no. Like it’s been said, those
games are an investment that he can’t turn over as quickly as some of the other things. We’re seeing
other proposals coming in, but we’re happy with Bob’s vending. However, as their contracts are up,
we’ll be able to see if there’s anyone else out there.

Gymnastics

Mr. Groden asked if there was any reason why gymnastics continues to do so well? Ms. Drenski said
that they are not doing anything differently than the rest of our programs. Timewise, moneywise,
instructorwise, we’re doing the same thing in the Rink that they are doing up there. It’s really a
mystery to us. We do six weeks, 45 minutes; the same time-frame that Gymnastics is. She does not
know. Karrie (Tipton) doesn’t advertise any more or less than we do. Mr. Dailey believes it’s word
of mouth. Her prices are a lot less than other gyms, so that could be a positive. It’s a good problem.
Mr. Groden asked if we get a lot of people from outside North Olmsted for the gymnastics program.
Ms. Drenski said she knew that there are 65% non-residents in skating, but she doesn’t know the
figures for gymnastics: she could find out for Mr. Groden. Mr. Groden said that there doesn’t
appear to be a lot of equipment costs to go with gymnastics, and he wondered if that could be a part
Page 3
