Recreation Commission Meeting
Page Five

Ted’s parents are both retired, from up-State New York. His Dad is a retired Petroleum Engineer
who started with Sinclair Oil out West, and then, when Ted was three, moved to New York and
worked for the State until he retired, about ten years ago. His Mom was with the New York
State Police over 15 years, in charge of payroll. They are both from Pennsylvania, Reading and
Franklin, respectively. He stated he has four other brothers and sisters. His oldest sister is a
public relations director at Virginia Commonwealth University. His oldest brother, Phil,
graduated from West Point and is currently a colonel in the U.S. Army at the Pentagon. He has a
new assignment coming up. His brother, Joe, also graduated from West Point and he’s in national
training out of California. He’s due to take a change of command in Ft. Benning, Georgia in
June. He may go to the Middle East, depending on the situation. His sister Sue lives in
Minnesota. She is currently a housewife with three daughters, two of whom are autistic, so she’s
very busy with her family as a full-time Mom. As far as his own family, his wife, Tonya, is from
Middleburg Heights. They live four houses from the house where she grew up. She’s tired of
seeing the same old street, but she’s stuck for now. Their little girl, Tatiana, is four and will be in
kindergarten next year. Their little boy, Nick, is 18 months. Work aside, this is a summary of
Ted’s background.

Mr. DiSalvo has been in Cleveland about 11 years, transferred from Texas, originally from up-
state New York.

As far as his 90-day objectives: they are all on the proper timeline. He has completed orientation
at the Rec Center and has met with supervisors and the full time staff. There are many part-time
employees he would like to meet with so they are familiar with him. He is in the middle of
observing the operations, procedures and programs. There are many to know, but he is getting a
good idea of what is entailed with the operations at the Recreation Department. He is
conducting one-on-one supervisor and office staff meetings to review notes on assessment and to
begin implementing necessary training, counseling, re-organization and proper procedures. Mr.
DiSalvo has met with all office help and supervisors, and will be meeting with Mr. Jesse within the
next week, reviewing his observations and discussing training and implementation of matters that
need specific attention. Ninety five percent of training and orientation is complete at this time.

An ad has been placed in the classifieds for a new Program Supervisor. Off the top, Betsy
Drenski will be involved in this procedure. It is desired that a candidate be selected by February
th
14. Ted would like Mr. Jesse’s assistance with this employment process. He would like to
narrow the group to about ten, and interview five main candidates. That timeline is going well.

The Recreation Department is getting ready to complete the summer brochure. Mr. DiSalvo is
evaluating current programs and pricing. Attached hereto is a Program Budget Worksheet as
Exhibit “A” to familiarize Ted with pricing, etc., with respect to the achievement of the brochure.
As regards the programs, there are money-makers and money-losers, which will be scrutinized.
Some programs may go, but others may be created. Mr. DiSalvo then asked the Commission for
Page 5
