Recreation Commission Meeting
September 8, 2003
Page Three

DJ Friday Night Skate

Major changes will involve making prepaid cards available for sale and all inclusive pricing that
covers admission and skate rental. Basically, skate rental is complimentary with the price of
admission. A minimum of five adult Recreation supervisors will be working as well as four
auxiliary police and one on duty policeman present during this event. All concerns have been
addressed to make it a fun and safe event for the participants. A zero tolerance with fighting and
abusive language by any participant will result in dismissal from the building. Proper reports will
th
be completed and parents will be notified. The first skate will open on September 12 and will
run through mid May of 2004. A good part of Autumn will likely be slow with high school
football games on Friday night. Ms. Hayes noted that the younger kids don't follow the football
games and will be participating in the skates. One price will cover everything. The first time the
kids come in, they will expect to buy both admission and skate passes. They will not know about
the cards, which will either have five sessions or ten. If they want to buy up to 50, they'll buy
five-ten cards. They will be laminated. Until the Rec Department gets the cards, there will be a
receipt at the ice rink, where there will be two supervisors collecting tickets. When the kid comes
to the supervisor, there will be a hole punched in the receipt and his hand will be stamped. That
way, if they give their receipt off to someone and that person shows up at the gate without a hand
stamp, the Rec will know there's been some mischief going on. Every other week, Mr. DiSalvo
will change the colors of the hand stamp. This may be an overreaction, but the intent is that if the
Rec is in control in the beginning, this will dissuade any trouble from happening. Also, just having
a police officer at the skate will send a message. Passes will be optional, but the more you buy in
advance, the more you save, so it's a win-win situation for everyone. If the pass is lost, it must be
bought again. If everything is done properly, money should be made on the Friday Night Skates.
Three people should not get in for the price of one. Two people will handle the Concession area.

This concludes the report of the Recreation Commissioner.

VISITORS' OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THE COMMISSION

Mr. DiSalvo then turned the meeting over to Bob Varga of Quality Quick Snacks and Larry
Hilton of J.L. Hilton Co., Inc. to discuss beverages, snacks and arcade games at the Rec Center.

Quality Quick Snacks

Mr. Varga began by stating that last Fall he became aware that the Rec Department was not
happy with its current vending company. As history, Quality Quick Snack Vending was started
by Mr. Varga and his wife about 12 or 13 years ago. They live in Brook Park and have so for
about 22 years and have close ties with that city. Their daughter is a lifeguard at North Olmsted
and had been for about two years. She's taught private swimming lessons as well. Now she's left,
gone to Ecuador as a foreign exchange student until next August.
Page 3
